Stricter penalties should be given to drivers who drive under the influence of alcohol. Rebels who drive after drinking alcohol will be punished with up to 3 years in prison.
For a fatal accident caused by a drunk driver or drugs, the courts will be able to give a sentence of 5 to 16 years! If the result of the accident is serious damage to health, the driver will face a penalty of 3 to 16 years in prison.
There will be no tolerance for people who want to avoid responsibility by running away. Such severe penalties will be imposed on drivers who flee the scene of an accident to avoid a blood alcohol test.
How fines and penalty points for drivers who break the law have become more severe
A fine of PLN 500 and 10 penalty points – this was the most severe punishment for street pirates in Poland for many years.
That changed in 2022. First, on January 1, 2022, a new fine rate went into effect, which introduced an increase in penalties.
This, however, was only the beginning of the tightening of punishment.
September 17, 2022 Penalties for repeat road offenders have doubled.
More than that The rules of punishment have changed. They are canceled only after two years, and not after a year, as it was in the past. In addition, this two-year period is counted only from the date of payment of the fine, and not from the date of receipt of the fine.

In addition, the police have more tools to catch drivers who break traffic laws. Not only the traffic police and the popular dryer, namely the hand speedometer.
Road pirates today are controlled by:
- unmarked police cars with video recorders from the SPEED police group (including BMW 3 series, Skoda Superb, Cupra Leon).
- police drones,
- modern cameras that measure the speed of 8 vehicles at the same time,
- component speed measurements
- police with laser speedometers.
Today, for driving once again under the influence of alcohol, you can get a lower penalty such as a fine or restriction of freedom. After the changes in the Penal Code, this will not be included. Repeat drunk driving offenders can be jailed for up to three years.
For a serious accident caused by a drunk or drugged driver, the courts will be able to issue a sentence of 5 to 16 years. If the result of the accident is serious damage to health, the driver will face a sentence of 3 to 16 years in prison. Today, it is a punishment of 2 to 12 years.
The strengthening of penalties aims to reduce the number of road accidents in Poland.
- speed not adjusted for traffic conditions (about 60 percent!),
- failure to yield the right of way,
- pass badly,
- disappear a safe distance.
The penalty level for drivers is 24. This means that after getting 25 points, the driver’s license is revoked. You can have 24 points, then you won’t lose your driving license yet.
The limit for drivers with less than 1 year of driving license is lower: 20 points. When a young driver gets 21 points, he loses his license.
After receiving more than 24 penalty points, the driver receives a referral for a psychological examination and re-examination to check the driver’s qualifications.
It is the same test that driver candidates must pass. First, you have to pass the theoretical part, and then the practical part, i.e. driving. The driver does not have to take a driver’s training course when re-examining. If the driver passes the test and passes the meeting with the psychologist, he gets his license. If he fails the test, he must take the entire driving training course and then retake the test.
Caution: if a person has several types of driving license, after exceeding the limit of penalty points, he loses them all!
