408 already exists – not only in Europe. In Asia, South America and the CIS countries, Peugeot has been selling the 408 as a sedan since 2010, based on the 308. The manufacturer has now presented its model version to Europe and plans to launch it in early 2023. The fastback limousine is classified in the C segment. If With a length of 4.69 meters and a wheelbase of 2.79 meters, the 408 is larger than the current 308, 3008 and 5008. The large body and long wheelbase should benefit rear passengers. The trunk offers 536 litres, with the rear seats folded, a total of 1,611 liters of storage space.
Peugeot design is characterized by striking lines, sharply defined boundaries and a combination of different car classes. The 408 is not a true sedan, it has the rear of a coupe and also features of an SUV. This is seen, for example, in raising four centimeters compared to the 308. Vertical LED strips in the form of fangs, the logo of the new brand and a raised hood dominate the front. The profile of the new 408 is emphasized by the separation between the black and colored parts. According to the manufacturer, this design is intended to emphasize the aerodynamic hatchback, in which the air flow is directed by two “cat ears” that create a balanced belt for the tailgate boot.
Peugeot i cockpit
The interior is typical of the brand, but has been further developed here and there. Located at eye level just above the steering wheel, the new digital instrument cluster has a 10-inch digital screen. In the GT equipment variant, the instrument cluster is also available with 3D technology. The digital screen is fully customizable and customizable and has several display modes showing real-time 3D navigation, radio/media, driver assistance systems or energy consumption. The airbags are positioned very high directly in front of the passengers’ heads and aim to improve their comfort. A 10-inch touchscreen sits in the center. The system features configurable i-switches located below the main screen. Each i-Toggle is a touch-sensitive shortcut that can be configured according to the user’s needs. Four USB-C ports and wireless smartphone connectivity complete the range of technologies.
Diesels are no longer available
Initially, Peugeot is developing a gasoline engine and two plug-in hybrids available for the 408. In the future, the French will also be fully electric. No diesel at all. The 1.2 liter three-cylinder petrol engine has 130 hp, the PHEV versions have 180 (front-wheel drive) and 225 hp (all-wheel drive). All models are always paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Peugeot has not yet published more details about the engine and sprint data from zero to 100 km/h. Prices for the 408 have not yet been announced.
