New Peugeot 408 Oozes Sportiness

The third body of the new compact series has arrived, but the León company has chosen to improve its cachet by introducing its own brand name. The new Peugeot 408 is a sports crossover with a fastback silhouette, filled with technology, with three engines, including two plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and confirming a future electric model.

Just now, the new Peugeot 408 was unveiled. It is a new model that differs from the two new compacts, despite the fact that it was previously regarded as the third body of these. The Leon brand has seized the chance to boost its cachet and put itself on a higher rung by counting on an appealing success format and coupé silhouette.

Gone are the particular coupé and Cabrio variants; the current 408 is now a modern crossover with a completely different design from the vehicle offered in China. The new 408 will go on sale at the start of 2023, and it will share the “EMP2” platform with the new 308. However, it offers more generous dimensions – detailed below – that allow it to climb a level. At first glance, the design is familiar, because the front image is the same, highlighting the fine headlights with Matrix LED technology and the fangs that run vertically through the bumper.

The new Peugeot 408 emphasizes design.

But from the central pillars to the rear, it changes dramatically, with a highly stylized roof line creating a fastback silhouette and a classic coupé air, culminating in a rear that, despite replicating the design of the taillights, has a spoiler on the tailgate sill and two ears on the sides of the rear window that channel air to this spoiler.

The new 408 is outfitted with 17- to 20-inch alloy wheels and boasts perimeter body protection in the finest SUV fashion. Peugeot will only offer six colors, including « Obsession Blue, » « Titanium Grey, » « Elixir Red, » « Pearl White, » « Black Pearl Black, » and « Artense Grey, » which will be unique to the « Allure » trim.

The Peugeot 408 is equipped with cutting-edge technologies.

Inside, it has the “i-Cockpit” instrument panel, a new multifunction steering wheel that can be heated, and a screen for the 10-inch “i-Connect” infotainment system that is standard on the “GT” trim and features a touch panel for the phone that is 3D-enabled and customizable. The system is equipped with wifi updates and a voice assistant that reacts to the natural language command “OK PEUGEOT.”

The new semi-autonomous driving system “Drive Assist 2.0” is highlighted by six cameras and nine radar sensors, which are available depending on the trim level of the new Peugeot 408. The package includes adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go functionality and lane-keeping assistance, allowing the vehicle to pass between 70 and 180 km/h and advising the driver to adjust the maximum speed to the prescribed restrictions.

The Peugeot 408’s new engines

The new Peugeot 408 will not be available with diesel engines; only the 130 hp PureTech gasoline engine and two front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrids will be available, each fitted with an 8-speed «eEAT8» automatic transmission.

The PHEVs share the 81 kW electric motor -equivalent to 110 horsepower- incorporated in the automatic gearbox, as well as the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 12.4 kWh and a power of 102 kW. However, they differ in the thermal component. One with the 180 hp PureTech gasoline engine and a total of 225 horsepower, and the other, more fuel-efficient, with the 150 hp gasoline engine and a total of 180 hp.

The firm offers clients a choice between two onboard chargers: a basic 3.7 kW single-phase unit and another with the same sort of current and 7.4 kW of capacity. With the latter with a 32 Amp charger, a full charge takes 1 hour and 55 minutes. The French company has stated that a completely electric version of the Peugeot e-408 will be available in the near future.
