Nissan Ariya and Qashqai e-Power

Nissan Ariya and Qashqai e-Power

Nissan has officially launched all of its electric models. Although we already know all the cars from drawings or video presentations, only now we were able to see what is the new flagship of Nissan – the all-electric Ariya crossover – and how the new e-Power drive works. It will make its European market debut in the Nissan Qashqai and combines an electric drive with an internal combustion engine that is designed to generate power with an electric unit. It is worth adding that Nissan plans to launch 23 electric models by fiscal year 2030, as well as 15 electric cars, and from next year, namely 2023, it will stop developing and promoting internal combustion engines.

Any chaos in the world, including. Due to this pandemic and the problems caused by the availability of components, the long-awaited Nissan Ariya will not appear on the market until the summer of 2022. The Japanese have high hopes for this model, since it will be the first of all products – an electric crossover and a car electric flag. It is the first vehicle to use the new CMF-EV platform that Nissan has developed for the entire Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. The Ariya will be available with a two-wheeler with a 63 kWh battery, a two-wheeler with an 87 kWh battery, as well as a top-of-the-line four-wheeler (e-4ORCE) with an 87 kWh battery. A longer range, up to 500 km, will be offered by the 2WD model with a larger battery.

The first impression of driving the new Nissan electric crossover confirms that the expectations set by the manufacturer for this model have a great chance of making them come true. As soon as you take your place inside, attention is drawn to the high quality of work and the use of high-end materials. The amount of space in the front and back rows is at least adequate, allowing up to four tall people to travel comfortably.

Although the first contact with pre-production cars was limited to driving the car on the track, it was still possible to know that the individual control elements of the car are ergonomically arranged. Touch buttons can add some storage, including to the weather, which, thanks to the haptic reaction, mimic the physical keys. Surprisingly, the amount of pressure required to make them work is much greater than you might expect.

An interesting possible solution for the use of an electric car is the removal of the central tunnel not only at the back, but also at the front. As a result, even in front of the driver and front passenger seats, the designers got a completely flat floor. The front seats are separated by a center console that can be electrically moved back and forth. Note, however, that only two people will fit in the back seat if the console is moved all the way back.

Ariya showed herself very well in terms of driving. The car uses the e-4ORCE all-wheel drive, which in the opinion of the designers is to ensure the best balance between power and control of the car, as well as to ensure quick responses and appropriate movements in various road conditions. On a specially designated track, simulating urban and extra-urban conditions and a short piece of freeway / freeway, you can see that in addition to excellent sound insulation, the Ariya also provides stability, even during fast corners, which is due to low center of gravity, such as with dynamics. It is true that we are dealing with an SUV, but with a full electric car it is.

The Nissan Qashqai also showed us how the new e-POWER powertrain performs in urban, extra-urban and highway conditions. The very idea of combining an electric unit with an internal combustion engine acting as an energy supplier is not new. But in Nissan’s opinion, this solution has an advantage that can encourage the purchase of an electric model for those customers who would like to try driving a car charged from the socket, but do not have the means to connect the car to electricity or do not have it. they want to use less frequency or charge less. expensive high-speed charging stations.

Nissan says that the e-Power drive makes sense. The combustion engine that produces energy, in this case a three-cylinder 1.5 turbo unit with a different compression ratio (8: 1 to 14: 1), producing 116 kW (158 hp), works continuously in the optimal range of speeds, which increases. Its effectiveness and benefits affect fuel consumption. According to the manufacturer’s data (at the same time), the car should consume 5.3 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle. We are talking about a car with an e-Power system that produces 140 kW (190 HP).

Indeed, a large part of Nissan’s assurance has already been proven in several kilometers of Qashqai e-Power traveled. On the one hand, we can enjoy the very good dynamics provided by the electric unit, as well as the complete absence of vibrations, still characteristic of many models with internal combustion engines. What is certainly not proven in reality is the “transparency” of the traditional category. However, this is heard during operation, although in fact the resulting sound is only heard in the background and does not disturb when driving.

The Nissan Qashqai e-Power can also drive in pure electric mode, but the electric driving range is only about 3 km. And although this situation is best addressed only as a solution intended to move, for example, in the garage, the e-Pedal Step feature can prove itself in everyday use. Activated by a button in the central tunnel near the driver’s seat, it allows you to accelerate / break by simply pressing / releasing the gas pedal. Of course, you can also press the brake pedal at any time, but in city traffic or when driving on roads with heavy traffic, this solution positively affects the smoothness of the ride.

During the presentation of electric models, Nissan also showed the latest X-Trail, Juke and Townstar model. In the first we find, among others Nissan’s innovative e-Power Training and e-4orce all-wheel drive. A quiet and comfortable ride along with a well-finished, spacious interior (as we were able to see for ourselves) bode well for this model for the future.

The Juke Hybrid will soon join the Nissan lineup. Interestingly, although the user has a choice of five types of car, including electric and diesel only, in each of them the car starts with a zero-output car (first electric gear). The use of an electric unit, and thus the need to keep the battery in the car, means a smaller luggage space (354/1237 l instead of 422/1305 l in the combustion version), but with an unchanged space for passengers. The total power of the hybrid vehicle system reaches 105 kW (143 hp), and the fuel consumption in the combined mode (approval pending) is 5.1 / 5.2 l / 100 km.

Nissan is also entering the world of light commercial vehicles with its electric models. The Townstar is a fully electric construction with a 45 kWh battery that provides power to a 90 kW (122 hp) engine producing 245 Nm of torque. It all allows you to travel up to 300 kilometers on a single charge, and to fill the energy reserve, you will be able to use AC 22 kW charging or DC 80 kW fast charging. Townstar power station with a capacity of 3.3 cubic meters. it will fit two euro-pallets, and the vehicle can transport goods weighing 1.5 tons.
