Why Nissan is trying to influence Honda in an EV partnership

According to Nikkei Asia, Nissan is considering approaching Honda for an electric vehicle partnership. Nissan is reportedly looking for a partner to develop an electric powertrain and EV platform. Discussions are currently taking place within the brand regarding a possible partnership. It is still unclear how Honda feels about the partnership.

Currently, Nissan only has the Nissan Ariya and Nissan Leaf as electric vehicles on the price list. And while the brand plans to launch three new EVs, it could use some help. This applies especially to Honda, which only sells us the Honda e:Ny1. The Honda e was not a sales success.

Cost-sharing partnerships

The reason for the possible partnership is simple. By working together on the next generation of electric vehicles, both brands can share development and production costs. Nissan and Honda can also buy battery packs together, increasing the number and reducing the price. This makes it possible for the Japanese to offer their EVs at affordable prices.

Nissan takes over BYD

Nissan hopes that the aforementioned low price is attractive enough to win the battle against the big Chinese competition. Last year, the country overtook Japan as the world’s largest exporter of cars. BYD in particular is getting bigger. The brand took the EV throne from America’s Tesla at the end of last year by selling the most EVs worldwide.
