Nyck de Vries: “Age really doesn’t matter” / Formula 1

After his good performance at Monza as a replacement for the ill Williams driver Alex Albon, Nyck de Vries can look forward to a regular driver’s contract for 2023. It does not matter to him that this happens late.

When Alex Albon suffered appendicitis during the Monza weekend, Nyck de Vries was given the chance to show his skills. And the former Mercedes reservist also used them. He finished ninth in the Williams race in London. Demonstrations of his driving skills did not go unnoticed: De Vries received a regular driver’s contract from AlphaTauri.

The Dutchman will be 28 years old when he races for the first time for the racing team from Faenza, which is older than most GP stars when they start their Formula 1 career. But that doesn’t bother him too much, as he explains to “”: “Every a man goes his own way, so it doesn’t matter how old I am or how I got here.”

“I think in the end it’s about getting a chance at the right time,” says the 2020/21 Formula E champion. “For me personally of course it was ups and downs, but I feel better to have a chance now.”

De Vries also admits: “There was a time when I thought that I would not be able to achieve my dream. At the same time, I have never given up on this dream.” He knows that the performance at Monza was decisive. “Monza was amazing, but I think my experience and maturity helped me put my feet down.”
