Oldie Story of the Week: “Land of Chaos” and Genesis

Actually, Phil Collins, Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford don’t really care about politics. Show business is entertainment and serious topics are not appropriate, according to the original opinion of the three Genesis titles.

But in the midst of the Cold War and nuclear weapons, the trio suddenly changed their minds. During the production of the album “Invisible Touch” visions of falling are so present that guitarist Rutherford writes fear from his soul. All the lines are about the political climate of fear and aggression and the coming nuclear conflagration.

And the music video should emphasize the message, but also bring out the wonderful details in the play. Because Phil Collins is interested in the cartoon dolls of the satirical show “Spitting Image”, they get the main role in the strip. The then US president and his wife Ronald and Nancy Reagan are ridiculed in the same way as Helmut Kohl, Margaret Thatcher, Erich Honecker or pop stars like Michael Jackson, Sting, Tina Turner and Madonna. All are laced with biting irony.

A very popular video is in continuous rotation on the music channel MTV and made the song a big seller: “Nchi ya Machafuko”.
