GM Energy has launched two-way EV car-to-home (V2H) chargers – this is how GM EVs will power the lights.

Once installed, GM Energy’s home EV chargers will enable customers to send power from a compatible GM EV to their home despite increasing power outages across the United States.

Customers can buy GM Energy’s V2H package through current GM brand programs. It is initially starting in five states – California, Florida, Michigan, New York, and Texas – with plans to expand over time.

At $7,299, the package isn’t enough. Includes GM Energy Powershift Charger for $1,699, and GM Energy V2H Element Kit for $5,600. Installation charges and rent are not included and will vary, depending on the existing configuration of the home and other factors. GM has partnered with home EV charging installer Qmerit.

But it’s comparable to other battery storage costs — the Powerwall costs $11,500 with a solar installation through Tesla — and GM’s system eliminates the need to install battery storage.

The first of GM’s EVs compatible with GM Energy’s domestic product line is the 2024 First Edition Chevrolet Silverado EV RST, which is expected to be available to customers this summer.

The Silverado will feature two-way V2H charging technology. With a large 200 kWh battery pack that can provide up to 10.2kW of power flow, the electric pickup can power an entire house for 21 days.

GM says it will continue to roll out two-way V2H charging technology across its Ultium EVs by 2026. That will include the 2024 Sierra EV Denali, 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, 2024 Chevrolet Equinox EV, and 2024 CaQdilla LYRI.

Some eligible 2024 GM EVs will require a trade-in or over-the-air upgrade to enable two-way charging.

ElectrekJameson Dow will give a demonstration of GM Energy’s new V2H products on May 9 and will report with insights.

GM Energy is poised to compete with the likes of Tesla with its Powerwalls — it says it will sell standalone battery storage and solar integration later this year.
