Multiple European mountain champion Maurizio Bottalico was considered the favorite to win the hill race in Landshaag this year. Instead of being on the winner’s podium, the Italian ended up in hospital with serious injuries.

None of the previous winners of the Landshaag – St. Martin who was at the beginning of this year. Wolfgang Gammer and Toni Rechberger retired, Andreas Gangl was out due to a permanent injury and Christian Zaiser and Thomas Berghammer were out for unknown reasons. A new hero had to be recognized by a ritual ceremony from 253 active participants.

On his high-performance sports machine, the European mountain champion showed in good time that he had accepted the role of the beloved. In wet conditions, he was faster than the riders who followed him, who were already able to complete their training on relatively dry slopes.

The runner-up in last year’s Junior Manx Grand Prix was looking to improve his record on his superbike, even though the conditions were worse. But his peak attempt ended in a hospital in Linz, where he was taken after a spectacular descent. Among other things, a hip fracture was discovered there, which was surgically fixed the same evening.
