- New sub-brand, new trophy name: ADAC Opel Electricity Rally Cup “powered by GSe”
- Opel’s pioneering design: The first all-electric rally car enters its third season
Rüsselsheim. Opel has confirmed its commitment to the world’s first electric rally cup, formerly known as the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup, has been renamed the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup “powered by Gif“. Opel’s future is electric, as is its motorsport business. For this reason, the name of the new sports brand GSe (Grand Sport electric) is now also included in the designation of the racing series with electric cars. The 2023 ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup season “powered by GSe” will be even more international: the calendar includes a total of eight events in four countries (Germany, France, Austria and Switzerland). Additionally, Opel and ADAC have extended the contract until 2024.
“Opel and ADAC together have created the first electric rally cup. This pioneering spirit has set a strong and important precedent in the world of international rallies. We will continue on this path and further develop this innovative racing series together, according to and our popular GSe sports models and with the goal of becoming the all-electric brand in Europe by 2028,” said Florian Huettl, Opel CEO.
“The innovative concept on which the ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup is based is a prime example of how the work and talent of young people and electric motorsport can be successfully combined. ADAC is a pioneer when it comes to increasing sustainability in motorsport. By extending our partnership with Opel we are sending a strong signal to distribute electricity to public meetings,” added ADAC Sport President Dr. Gerd Enser.
The car manufacturer from Rüsselsheim and Europe’s largest car club have been collaborating in motorsport for more than a decade. In addition to the successful single-cup projects ADAC Opel Rally Cup and ADAC Opel Electric Rally Cup, this partnership also gave birth to the ADAC Opel Rally Youth Team. The Youth Team represents the second pillar of the joint talent development program and boasts some amazing palm trees. In 2022, Laurent Pellier celebrated the fifth title for the ADAC Opel Rally Junior Team in the FIA Junior ERC Rally Championship (JERC) and Opel Corsa Rally4. A year earlier, the transalpine driver had been crowned the first overall champion of the ADAC Opel e-Rally Cup.
“The collaboration between ADAC and Opel is a prime example of developing talent,” said Jörg Schrott, Head of Opel Motorsport. “Both partners share the same philosophy and strategy. From the 2013 season until today, almost 120 drivers from 19 nations have taken their first steps in a professional rally thanks to the direct manufacture cups of ADAC and Opel. The best player among them became part of the ADAC Opel Rally Youth Team and aroused great interest at European level. The five names of JERC drivers of Emil Bergkvist, Marijan Griebel, Chris Ingram, Mārtiņš Sesks and Laurent Pellier speak for themselves. I am delighted with the extension of our agreement. It gives participants and teams more secure planning.”
One of the highlights of the 2023 racing calendar is the season finale at the Central European Championships near Passau, when participants will compete with Opel Corsa Rally Electric and a 100 kW/136 hp battery in the context of the FIA World Rally Championship. Meanwhile, 2022 Cup champion Timo Schulz will be looking to follow in the footsteps of Laurent Pellier and the Opel Corsa Rally4 in the European Junior Championship.
