Opel Frontera 2024: Yes, Opel Relaunches Frontera

The Opel Frontera was a 4×4 that had its little success in the 90s. It is being reborn today… or rather, the name Frontera is being used again with a new model, which will share many aspects with the Citroën C3 Aircross.

There are some manufacturers that, until recently, still did not have an SUV in their lineup, like Lotus for example. There are others who, on the contrary, have several and for a long time: this is the case ofOpel which, in the 1990s, already had Frontera.

Indeed, it was 4 × 4 (understanding, a four-wheel drive, with some ability to walk on the road), but its family appeal would equate today with an SUV. It was replaced, between 2005 and 2014, by the more secretive Antara, which itself was replaced by the Grandland (based on the old 3008 platform, to be updated in the coming months).

At the same time, Opel launched the Mokka (we tested its second generation here) and the Crossland. It is the latter that is about to be replaced by – we will get you straight to the point – this new Frontera that we are writing about today!

Opel Frontera 2024: do you recognize it?

Produced in Slovakia, in Trnava, the Opel Frontera 2024 is based on the extended Citroën C3 platform (the new one). At first glance, it seems to at least have a hood and front doors. The usual bodywork stuff ends there: it’s from the new Citroen C3 Aircross, from which the Opel Frontera 2024 comes.

We have known this new C3 Aircross for several months… in its Indian version. Indeed, as with the C3 “in short”, the chevron brand served the Indian market first. The European version, with revised front and rear faces (with new interior, new technical settings, other technologies, etc.), will come soon. It is also said that this variant will be presented before the summer, but let’s go back to our sheep, or rather our Frontera.

Indian Citroen C3 Aircross that we were talking about.

If the silhouette of this Opel Frontera 2024 is similar to that of the C3 Aircross, and certain features are recognizable (including the glazing), however it makes an effort to distinguish itself. The front part is in the pure (new) Opel tradition with the “Vizor” grille and, in general, inspiration to be sought from the Mokka and Astra. At the back, the square base of the Indian Citroen C3 Aircross headlights is more recognizable… Frontera however adds a touch of elegance with this “strip”, in the upper part, that extends to the tailgate.

Opel does not provide any other information, especially its size, but it should be around 4.32 meters (the length of the C3 Aircross in India).

Opel Frontera 2024: up to 1,600 liters of trunk space

In fact, this new Opel Frontera 2024 (launched in a beautiful Blood Orange color with a black roof – this confirms in passing that it will be available in a two-tone configuration) does not accept to reveal itself at the moment.

We only know that inside, the volume of the trunk will vary between 460 and 1,600 liters (rear seats folded, making a flat floor). 460 liters is not bad: it is certain that this figure is valid only in the configuration of 5 seats. Because in 7 seats (yes, the Indian C3 Aircross has the specialty of having 7 seats, despite the design in it. Citroën has confirmed that the European version also will have them… maybe Opel Frontera 2024 too?), trunk volume must be low.

The dashboard mimics that of the Opel Astra, with all the connectivity one would expect from a modern car: central touchscreen (10 inches), digital panel behind the steering wheel (also 10 inches), smartphone charger…

Opel Frontera 2024, which can support up to 200 kg on its roof, will arrive at dealers in the summer. Until then, we will know more, especially about its range of engines. What we can say at the moment is that it will be available in hot form (probably with 1.2 PureTech of 100 and 136 hp) and in electricity (the same engine as Peugeot e-208, DS 3, Ypsilon, etc. – will be available. it can also receive up to 156 hp ?

Oh, we can also tell you that the four-wheel drive of the “original” Opel Frontera will not be available…
