What to choose at the entry level?

Two French city cars have been redesigned. A good opportunity to deal with them in the entry-level “Evolution” and “Active” versions with the smallest engines available.

It is a Franco-French duel that continues year after year. Number 1 in sales for a while, the Peugeot 208 was “stolen” the top spot by its eternal rival last summer, the Renault Clio. A few figures make it clearer. In 2023 alone, the 208 and Clio represented more thanone in ten registrations in France. These two stars of the French market that show great sales figures, as well sales 97,471 for example Renault vs 86 263 for Peugeot. A year that ended with a clear victory for the diamond after four consecutive years where the Peugeot 208 systematically took the 1st place. A success that is undoubtedly due to the Clio’s more aggressive pricing. If we take into account (small) discounts and possible penalties, its average price is established 21 400 € on this issue 1.0 Sce Evolution de 65 chapter ofcompared to €23,400 for the 208 in configuration 1.2 PureTech BVM5 Active giving 75 hp. A difference of €2,000 between the two, which represents quite a difference in this range! Style-wise, the Clio V it benefited from a facelift a year ago, and was given a makeover penned by Gilles Vidal, the former styling boss at Peugeot. A redesign of the 208 II quickly followed, with a sharper design to differentiate itself from the older version.

Entry-level petrol matchup: 1.0 Sce 65 vs 1.2 PureTech 75

In these “first price” versions, our two opponents show a certain simplicity, without falling into absolute poverty. They present well and deliver standard equipment of honor and, for example, a split bench seat, a panel reading system or a touch screen and a wireless Mirror. Under their hood, we find “old” engines, without turbo, related to manual boxes 5 speed. Although not without good intentions, these blocks quickly show themselves to be out of step with the suburban environment, even ifthey can take the highway from time to time. With less muscle and a shorter fifth gear, the Peugeot 208 will be more comfortable there, without being more ambitious than the Clio (6.2 l per 100 km compared to 6.3). The repetition in the 4th is also a little shorter and PureTech 75 ch (13s4 at 80 to 120 km/h compared to 14s9). In all cases, the chassis of our two models is encouraging and the soundproofing seems to be quite accurate, as well as the means of expression. Best equipped (reversing radar, digital instruments) and sold €1,400 cheaper, However, the Renault Clio won a very close match: 136 to 133 points in favor of the Clio on our rating grid.
