Performance Mercedes-AMG C63 SE – 680hp, but only 4 cylinders

The name of the car is Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance, and just saying the full name of the latest incarnation of the C63 S out loud takes longer than the time it takes to accelerate to a hundred. The latter takes just 3.4 seconds and is 0.6 seconds better than the predecessor with a V8 under the hood. And this despite the weight exceeding 2 tons! Well, the new C63 S is very heavy (2036 kg), and let’s add that the European offer will also include a station wagon with an additional ballast of more than 30 kg.

Mercedes-AMG C63 SE Performance – hybrid from AMG

You had to use a very powerful machine to push such a large mass. The idea behind the drivetrain of the new C63 S is a combination of a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine with an electric motor powered by a traction battery. In other words, it is a very powerful and fast hybrid of plugins. A sign of the times, because no new C-Class models from AMG will get a unit larger than four cylinders – after all, the C43 model replaced the V6 with four cylinders. But there are more changes for the new C63 S, because instead of a rear-wheel drive and a V8 with a turbo, we get a hybrid with a four-wheel drive and a torsion rear axle. Does all this stand a chance of convincing existing C63 fans? They certainly have a lot to swallow, including changing the tribal sound and the sound that comes from zero electricity.

It’s powered by an engine familiar from the aforementioned C43 or the luxury SL43 – a 2-litre unit with the designation M139L. But while the SL reduces 381 hp from it, and the C43 408 hp, here we have as much as 476 hp from two liters. This result is not only the same as the outgoing V8, but also a record for serial 2-liter engines. The torque of 545 Nm makes this value a record too, and that’s not all, because we also have an electric motor.

It adds up to 204 HP (one time for 10 seconds, without it the power reaches 95 HP), which is transferred to the rear axle with the help of an electronically controlled differential and a two-speed gearbox. A powerful electric motor can freely push the car up to a speed of 125 km / h, and a smooth ride allows it to cover up to 13 km in zero-emission mode. Not much, it’s true, but there is a modest battery capacity behind it, which stores only 6.1 kWh of energy. A big “battery” would add even more mass, and no one would like that.
