Forget the V8. In the new AMG-branded C-Class, you won’t find an engine larger than two liters. However, this did not stop the experts from Affalterbach from creating an emotional car. A combination of plugins came to the rescue.
After the C43, the time has come for the powerful C63 which uses a two-liter petrol engine, although it is supported by more powerful equipment. I’m talking basically about the extra electric car. It is thanks to him that it was possible to maintain performance worthy of AMG – despite the fact that half of the cylinders were cut compared to the predecessor. Although the petrol engine itself is nothing to be ashamed of.
This is the AMG 139L two-liter four-cylinder engine with supercharger support. The C43 produces 408 hp. There is more power here, like 476 HP. It is officially the most powerful mass-produced four-cylinder in the world. By the way – the maximum torque of 545 Nm also leaves a little to be desired.
And we have not yet included the additional electric motor, which itself produces 204 HP of power. It is located just above the rear axle and works in conjunction with an electronically controlled limited slip differential. As befits the plug-in, it is possible to travel with the stream itself, although the 13 km range does not knock you to your knees. AMG explains this by favoring performance over economy.
The current from the 6.1 kWh battery translates to a maximum of 150 kW of power (for 10 seconds) or 70 kW continuously. In total, the driver will have up to 680 HP of power and 1020 Nm available on all four wheels. These parameters are better not only than the previous C63 with V8, but also competing models from the BMW brand. Performance? The first hundred after 3.4 seconds and 280 km / h top speed (250 km / h and limit).
On board, in addition to the hybrid mentioned above, we also find a 9-speed automatic transmission, carbon ceramic brakes, adaptive suspension or steered rear axle. There is also a driving mode selection system with a new “Master” that has advanced features to manage.
An interesting fact is also the energy saving mode and the adjustable recovery rate. In the extreme setting, it will be possible to drive the car using only the gas pedal – as in electric cars.
Regarding illustrations, You’ll recognize the Performance version of the C63 SE mainly by the Turbo E Performance badges. Also important are the additional air intakes on the bonnet and the AMG logo placed above the iconic star. As usual, the new AMG will be delivered from the factory with 19-inch wheels. Optionally, however, they can be replaced with a 20-inch.
Latest engineering jobs from Affalterbach promise to be great. There’s just one problem – weight, which, due to the additional electric motor and battery, has increased to 2036 kg. And it is worth mentioning that the station wagon will also be available in Europe, heavier by another 34 kg.
We’ll soon find out if the C63 SE Performance is as good live as it is on paper. The first pieces should appear in showrooms in early 2023. Prices are still unknown at this time.
