Peugeot brings the first electric station wagon from Europe: How efficient is the E-308 SW, which is not a bargain at 45,000 euros? driving test.

Chinese automakers have even respected this domain: the station wagon is the favorite child of Europeans and especially Germans. But the first electric caravans surrounded us from the Middle Kingdom. When it comes to small cars, it was the manufacturer MG that was the first to cross the finish line with the Marvel5. In the top class, the Nio followed suit with the BMW ET5 Touring five-series competitor. But at least Peugeot can now officially look forward to being “the first European automaker to offer a 100 percent electric station wagon variant.” And it won’t be long before the next electric station wagon from Stellantis, the Opel Astra Electric Sports Tourer, hits the market.

With 156 hp, the Peugeot E-308 SW is underpowered, but…

Both station wagons have the same drivetrain: The front engine with 156 hp is not a real powerhouse, but like all power units it has a lot of oomph. Now you can say that now the Chancellor has promoted this word. This unit moves the weight of 1.8 tonnes effortlessly even on mountain slopes and maneuvers the 4.6 meter long station wagon through the curves with surprising ease. The only thing we have to complain about is the steering. In the space of the game it is very difficult to move. The chassis does its job very well. Even with speed bumps on the road, the car does not work cleanly and precisely; Â

Peugeot E-308 SW: This is the range

Acceleration (10.0 seconds from 0 to 100) and the chassis is one thing, but more important is how far you can go with an electric car like the E-308. Usually there is not only a big gap between the theoretically possible and the actual range, but often the whole canyon. And the Peugeot e-308 SW is no exception. Test: We start with a full battery of 51 kWh and a range of 422 km. That would be very neat. After a distance of 172 km in a battery-friendly temperature of around 20 degrees and frequent sports driving, we park the car again. Balance: We used more than predicted: 16.7 instead of 15.9 kW. The remaining range is 132 km on the speedometer. And that’s a bit surprising: Because that means that we had to stop 290 km on the way to 172 km. If you add this more and, according to experience, “add fuel” with 50 km left, then you actually have a range of kilometers 250. Parallel down, of course, in winter.

Peugeot E-308 SW: 80% charge within 35 minutes

Every buyer needs to know this before putting a French compact car in their garage: it can only go a long distance on a small amount. In addition to the battery being very small, charging times are also average. With a charging power of 100 kW, the battery can be recharged in 35 minutes. But then it only reaches 80 percent of its capacity. This means that you have to cut 20 percent here: instead of a possible 400 km distance, there are only 320 km left for each successful charging station. In fact, depending on the weather and driving style, only 250 kilometers remain. Anyone who has a weak bladder can be happy about the results of frequent breaks, but everyone can be annoyed by it. Speaking of: Unfortunately, there is no active payment planning that is integrated with the navigation system. A separate program, which is coming soon, aims to overcome the deficiency. It is included free of charge for six months in the Connect Plus package, after which you can subscribe for a fee. The subscription model also applies to all other device variants.

Space in the E-308 SW: Only a slight compromise compared to the combustion engine and hybrid

The available space in a station wagon is just as important as the range. Here the electric 308 only has to make a little compromise compared to combustion engines and hybrids that remain in the Peugeot range. It is 60 liters less, which can be controlled. The bench can be folded down easily using two levers on the side wall. Unfortunately there is no flat loading area, but thank God the step is not too big. From the outside, the e-308 looks very modern. At least in front. Because like the bigger E-3008 coming next spring, the compact already has a new look for the brand with a modified and current lion logo. The radiator grille is quite large and flows like the mane of a French heraldic animal.

Peugeot E-308 SW: starting price at 45,765 euros

The new E-308 isn’t necessarily cheap either, but it’s not a new car at the moment. With a purchase price of 45,765 euros, it is almost 2,000 euros higher than the Astra Sportstourer. This is also intentional because the Stellantis Group ranks the Peugeot brand slightly higher than Opel. But the basic model should have more equipment than its corporate sibling Rüsselsheim. Speaking of relatives: the smallest Peugeot 208 is also coming at the end of the year. The bestseller (one million copies sold) has been redesigned: the vertical light claws at the front and the horizontal ones at the back make the cat from Peugeot look very good. The E-208 also gets a 156 hp motor and a 51 kWh battery. It is said to have a range of up to 410 km and is faster than the E-308. No wonder, after all, it weighs 200 kg less. Cost: From 40,325 euros.

Our conclusion: Is E-308 the lion king or just a living room lion?

The E-308 drives precisely, quickly and surprisingly. It is practical, easy to use and comfortable. Unfortunately, the French installed a battery that was too small. Unfortunately, when it comes to ranks, the lion is not the lion king, but only the lion in the room. Rudolf Bögel
