Chery chose Spain as the destination produce its cars in Europe. As we saw a few days ago, the Chinese automaker will introduce the jjoint venture with Spanish EV Motors (through the Ebro brand) making cars at the Barcelona factory that was once owned by Nissan.

In the past there were also talks of negotiations between the Chinese and Italian companies. Apparently, however, Chery received little feedback from the Government and therefore preferred the Spanish option. The agreement between the two companies was sealed today Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez who participated in the contract signing ceremony.

The plans for the Spanish plant are very ambitious given that Chery has made it known that it will be one of its main transportation facilities in the world.

By 2029the goal is to get to one total production (between the two companies) of 150 thousand cars per year. Activities will begin in late summer. Initially, Chery will produce the OMODA 5 SUV in petrol and electric versions. Later, a An electric pickup that will be sold under the Ebro brand owned by EV Motors.

The factory plan also means new jobs. As far as we know, in fact, the venture aims to restore up to 1,250 jobs lost when Nissan closes plant. The joint venture will start employing 150 staff already “in the coming months”.

Attending the ceremony to sign the agreement, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that it is more than a big business project. In fact, it should be considered as a symbol of the regeneration of the whole country, of Spain’s ability to attract foreign investment, and also an example of public and private cooperation.
