Citroen AMI with sunroof. You can run on energy from the sun!

Citroen AMI is a small electric car with two seats and a maximum speed of 45 km/h and a range of 75 km. Now it can be equipped with a sunroof, which increases the range and enables the use of on-board equipment, for example, the input air, stationary time.

The author of the solution is Simodles Plastiki, which created PVAB – plastic material with embedded photovoltaic modules. Such a roof is not only an electricity generator, but also provides transparency, which means that it acts as a colored window to the world. It reaches maximum efficiency when placed on the roof of the car, but it can also be used on the side, like windows.

The solution was developed in Portugal and the company’s first product is the Citroën AMI glass roof. Due to the small size of the motor, the current obtained is not very high, it is only 140W. According to measurements made by the company, this is enough to increase the range up to eight kilometers per day, depending on the location and sunlight:

Paris: 5 km on average per day, 8 km in summer,
Seville: average 7.5 km per day, 11.3 km in summer,
Munich: average 4.9 km per day, 8.3 km in summer.

An additional advantage of such a roof, apart from increasing the range, is the ability to use solutions that use less electricity, such as ventilation, in the car during the day.

The company does not yet provide a price for its solution, but it is possible that this type of roof will be offered as an option when ordering AMI. If a high efficiency of converting sunlight into electricity can be achieved in the future, this solution could be even more popular than today.
