With a length of more than five meters, the KIA EV9 is a real colossus. Visually, the electric car is attractive. However, when it comes to variety, it falls short of expectations.

The EV9 is not only amazing because of its dimensions, the design is also polarizing. Audience reactions range from overwhelming enthusiasm to outright rejection, although surprisingly, positive comments predominate. The team around the chief designer of Kia Karim Habib did everything right, because it is important to talk about the appearance. A Russian university has also developed the electric car that is being talked about – the only one called the worst electric car in the world. The smooth surfaces of the retractable bow door handles and the attractive Ocean Blue Matt paint (1,800 euro fee), which the GT Launch Edition we drove in a daily test came in, catch the eye.

The Kia EV9 has four individual seats and a three-person bench

Our model had four individual seats – all heated and air-conditioned – and three-person bench seats in the back. The two middle seats can be easily rotated by 90 degrees using a lever, so that you can easily and easily go back or fasten your child in the child seat easily and without straining their backs. Due to the significantly reduced space there, it is ideal for very young people or teenagers who do not need a full seat back. According to the manufacturer, the entire chair is vegan.

The second and third row seats can be folded down from the trunk by pressing a button. The volume of the luggage compartment is between 333 standard liters with seven seats and 2,318 liters with full use of the luggage space. To load, the upper loading sill of 82 cm must be lowered. A 52 liter compartment under the front hood provides additional storage space, for example for charging cables. In the version without all-wheel drive, the Frunk even holds 90 liters. The bonnet is supported by a telescopic rod to open it, which avoids disturbing the annoying under the bonnet. The maximum payload is 625 kg. If this is fully utilized, you will be traveling with a 3.3 ton truck.

Lush dimensions: height 5.01 meters, height 2.26 meters and height 1.78 meters

In city traffic, you usually drive the Kia SUV, which is five centimeters shorter than the BMW 5 Series, with caution, but with confidence after a short time to get used to it. Only when parking you should pay special attention to the width of 2.26 meters. Fortunately, and to calm your nerves, there are also plenty of helpers to shoot and shine on board. However, the turning circle of 12.8 meters always requires a good sense of proportion as well as a strong steering thrust. There are three driving programs to choose from as well as an additional individual program. In addition, the EV9 offers options for important surfaces such as sand, snow and rain.

Thanks to 385 hp, the Korean colossus can reach speeds of up to 200 km / h.

The electric motor produces 385 hp and 700 Nm of torque. This power can be easily tamed, and the 1.78 meter long EV9 is designed more like a good touring car than a sports car due to its concept. However, driving an all-wheel drive SUV is very stable even at high speeds, but you should always be aware of the mass being moved. However, when you approach the top speed of 200 km/h, you can see the frequency decrease on the display in the cockpit, and the wind noise also becomes annoying.

Although we rarely went faster than recommended, we didn’t come close to Kia’s claimed 512km range. With more than 350 km for a battery with a charge of 99.8 kWh, we could not count with any peace of mind. We stayed away from the manufacturer’s stated consumption of 20.2 kWh per 100 km; with an average driving style almost everywhere, we finally got an average of 27.8 kWh per 100 km. With a few tricks you can get a few extra kilometers of range thanks to recovery.

Luxury price and luxury equipment

The base price of the EV9 AWD in GT line equipment is 83,190 euros. There is a luxury car and equipment for that. For example, the EV9 has two sliding roofs, a large sliding storage compartment is hidden in the center console for the second row of seats and there is a 230-volt outlet in the trunk. Also interesting and user-friendly is that the charging socket cover closes with the push of a button. What is not so good, however, is that the steering column lever and the start button and the selection of the driving program are covered by the steering wheel. It takes time until you understand how to use this without mistakes. The fiddly steering wheel control is also not very user-friendly.

Conclusion: Because of its dimensions, its comfort features and its spaciousness, the Kia EV9 is perfectly suited as a large cruiser. But this suffers from a consumption that is too high and a range that is too short. And it’s not cheap either. However, experts think that the prices of electric cars will fall in the coming years. Reason: Batteries can be produced more cheaply. By the way, Kia is not the only manufacturer that offers an electric car with seven seats. However, some of them still have more charm than a commercial vehicle.
