2023 Chevrolet Bolt, Reigning Low-Priced EV Leader, Disappears from Dealer Polls

The 2023 Chevy Bolt, the perennial low-cost leader in the US EV market, has disappeared from many dealership lots in Los Angeles.

Rumors at Chevy’s largest Los Angeles dealership — one of the largest EV markets in the U.S. — show the new 2023 Bolts are for all intents and purposes on the brink of extinction after General Motors halted production of the car. There are a few left — often just one or two on dealer lots — but they can go fast, according to salespeople at Los Angeles dealerships I contacted. The Bolt EV has proven to be a great deal with the $7,500 credit included. That brings the $26,500 1LT model down to about $19,000 before taxes and fees, making it affordable for buyers who wouldn’t normally be able to afford an electric car. .

“The 1LTs went first, then the 2LTs,” the dealer told me, citing the low price as the main reason. There are isolated exceptions, however, in California as a whole. Those tend to be the big Chevy dealers who have traditionally stood for selling a disproportionate number of electric vehicles. After selling off some of the cheaper 1LTs, Capitol Chevrolet in San Jose, Calif. — just south of San Francisco — has about 20 2LT Bolts left on its lot, the dealer told me. 2LTs are priced at $32,180 with a dealer discount of $1,250, bringing the price to $30,930. That price does not include a sales tax credit point that can shave an additional $7,500 off the price after taxes and fees. And Allen Gwynn Chevrolet in Glendale, Calif. has about half a dozen 2LTs left.

There are a number of 2023 Bolt EUVs, the highest priced and largest variant of the Bolt, on dealer lots, especially the top-of-the-range Premier models that tend to be priced at Bolt levels starting at around $35,000.

General Motors stopped production of the Bolt in December last year. Instead, Chevrolet is now pushing the 2024 Blazer EV and Equinox EV, with the latter replacing the Bolt with a starting price of $34,995.
