The dust has not yet settled after the volume reduction of Tesla cars (I mentioned it to you in the weekly car preview), and now another brand will “annoy” customers who have already ordered the newest Polestar 2.
Polestar today (Tuesday, January 24, 2023) presented a planned upgrade that will enter the Polestar 2 model range for 2024. Well, to be honest, if I were one of the customers who have already placed orders for this electric car, I would be a little sorry. Fortunately, I don’t mind. For many reasons. Neither do you, because until now Polestar is not officially available in Poland. However, “between the bits” in international connections, something may change in this regard, even in 2023. But in the meantime, let’s return to the topic and answer the question, what will change in the example of Polestar 2?
This model will receive brand new electric motors of the new generation, a more powerful and more capable battery (not only a greater capacity, but also greater power fed into the system and absorbed during charging). In addition, many additional devices at the level of individual models, SmartZone sensors, and also something that will allow you to slide the future Polestar 2, i.e. rear-wheel drive (the current Polestar 2 2023 model has front-wheel drive . in the single-engine variant).
Let’s start with the electric motors, which are basically redesigned. They use new permanent magnet technologies made with silicon carbon transformers. As a result, the power output of the Polestar 2 electric car will increase from 231 hp to 299 hp. Torque also increases from the current 330 Nm to a massive 490 Nm, and we are still talking about the single engine version.
The version of two engines is to have 421 hp and 740 Nm of torque, which will enable it to reach 100 km / h in an average of 4.3 seconds. The company also announces a Performance package that increases power to 455 hp and shortens the time to 100 km / h to 4.1 s. The big battery is to have a capacity of 82 kWh, which should be enough (estimated measurements, not from WLTP but the manufacturer’s own data) for about 500 km (more than 300 miles), which is an increase of 10% over the revision version of originally.
In addition, the maximum power with which the battery can be charged has also increased to 205 kW. Interestingly, this does not apply to the more powerful two-engine variant, which, despite the higher power resulting from the use of redesigned electric units, will not receive more powerful batteries, the package will still have 78 kWh, and higher charging power. is 155 kW.
The new 2024 Polestar 2 will also feature the SmartZone Polestar sensor suite, a new sensor system with radar and front-facing camera, which is expected to significantly improve the performance of driver assistance and assistance systems. Astute readers will surely recognize the commonality with Volvo’s announcement of powertrain changes for the XC40 and C40 electric, which also received rear-wheel drive. The association is quite appropriate, because Polestar, which started as a racing car manufacturer, is now a Volvo factory and a subsidiary of Volvo.
