All details about the new seven-seater SUV

(Motorsport-Total.com/Motor1) – The Mazda CX-60 was allowed to be the official flagship of the Japanese brand in Europe for less than two years. How come? The large SUV is already being displaced from the top position in the model range by a larger car. And while the marketing department talks about “Noble Toughness” becoming “Graceful Toughness,” we happily welcome the new Mazda CX-80.

Grow

The CX-80 is based on the technology of the CX-60. And he also largely accepts his design. But the dimensions and proportions have been adjusted to make the model more spacious for the third row of seats.

There are two drives to choose from: a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of 60 kilometers and a 3.3-liter six-cylinder diesel with 254 hp. Is it worth waiting to get started? We were already able to take a seat in the new SUV.

Structure

Apparently there is no difference when viewed from the front. The front is still largely designed and is dominated by a large radiator grille, which changes to the side with full LED lights. The hood is long and the cabin appears to rest on the rear axle to emphasize the architecture with the front engine and rear drive orientation, one line.

Compared to the CX-60, the new CX-80 is 25 centimeters longer overall, 24 millimeters higher and has a wheelbase of 25 centimeters. Will the size be pleasing even without all-wheel steering? The first test drive will have to show this in the future. But now there are more numbers to compare:

Long time
Mazda CX-60: 4745 mm
Mazda CX-80: 4.995 mm

Width
Mazda CX-60: 1.890 mm
Mazda CX-80: 1.890 mm

Height
Mazda CX-60: 1.670 mm
Mazda CX-80: 1.710 mm

the wheel
Mazda CX-60: 2.870 mm
Mazda CX-80: 3.120 mm

In the side view you can see the extended glazing. The wheels have a diameter of up to 20 inches and look almost small considering the overall attractive appearance of the car, while the rear with LED taillights looks traditional. The distinguishing factor on the back? exhaust pipes are missing. Apparently this was not “graceful” enough for the designers. In any case, the new body color “Melting Copper” is a blessing.

Internal affairs

Here we put the cart before the horse and start at the trunk. There is 258 liters of space between the power door and the third row of seats. If you fold the last row, 687 liters fit in the luggage compartment and only if the driver and front passenger seats are occupied, up to 1,971 liters can be loaded.

Good: A 1,500-watt socket in the luggage compartment and a rear seat that can be moved by 120 millimeters with adjustable backrests for more comfort and, above all, flexibility.

Judging by the external dimensions, it is clear that there is a lot of space for the occupants (and for us during the first seat test). According to Mazda, two passengers up to 1.70 meters tall can travel comfortably in the third row.

So we go straight up to the supposedly cheapest seats. It is certainly not a pleasure for 1.85 meters, but at least the way over the big rear doors is acceptable and the view from the big windows is also good and makes you forget the small situation. In addition, the materials used are of high quality all the way back. It’s worth it.

The technical equipment is first-class with two large 12-inch instruments and infotainment screens. The system has been updated and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and, with an internet connection, also with Amazon Alexa.

In addition, there are all the latest driving assistance systems and a number of useful functions such as a 360-degree camera system, which also has a “Trail” function integrated with a zoom mode to support when using a trailer hitch . By the way, you can connect 2.5 tons.

He gives

The Mazda CX-80 will be available at launch with two different powertrains: a plug-in hybrid or a light six-cylinder diesel engine. Both come standard with all-wheel drive and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The PHEV has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that is paired with a 129 kW electric motor. This results in a total output of 327 hp and a maximum torque of 500 Nm. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 195 km/h.

The lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 17.8 kWh ensures an electric range of 60 km according to the WLTP cycle, and the manufacturer claims a combined consumption of 1.6 l/100 km. In comparison: the CX-60 travels 3 kilometers more and needs 0.1 liters less. Right.

The diesel engine is a 3.3-liter smooth-hybrid inline-six with 254 hp and 550 Nm of torque. The performance is good, as it runs from 0 to 100 km / h in 8.4 seconds and reaches a speed of 219 km / h. Here the new one is attached to the old flag. However, consumption should be around 0.5 l/100 km higher.

Equipment and price

Mazda offers the new Mazda CX-80 in five equipment lines Exlusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus. As with other models, Prime Line as a base is not offered. In all variants, the Mazda CX-80 has seven seats as standard, with three seats in the second row.

The Homura and Homura Plus models are optionally available as six seats and two individual seats in the second row. In the Takumi Plus equipment line, two individual seats with seat ventilation and a center console are available for the second row of seats.

Standard equipment on all models is also good and includes power front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, a 12.3-inch center screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Prices for the new Mazda CX-80 currently start at 55,350 euros for the E-Skyactiv PHEV Exclusive-Line. The additional price compared to the Mazda CX-60, which is comparable in terms of equipment and vehicle, is 4,500 euros.

By the way: The manufacturer has not yet announced the price of the diesel model. If the PHEV difference between the 60s and the 80s is the same for the diesel engine, we are talking about a starting price of 59,050 euros.
