Polestar and Volvo are becoming more official, but not completely

It looks like the material of a soap opera, the relationship between Polestar and Volvo. Initially the two were so close that the Polestar name became attached to Volvo products, but over time the small label craved more independence. It also received this in 2017 when Polestar became a separate brand, although the brand was still heavily supported by Volvo behind the scenes… But now it’s time for Polestar to stand on its own two feet.

Not below but close to Volvo

Volvo has announced that it will reduce its stake in Polestar, and not just a little bit. The Swedes will sell no less than 62.7 percent of their total shares in the brand. This means that Volvo will still own 18 percent of Polestar’s shares, compared to the full 49.5 percent until now. The decision goes hand in hand with the increasing importance of Geely itself, the mother house of Volvo as well as Lotus, Lynk&Co and Smart, for example. We still don’t know the exact figures on this, but it basically means that Polestar is now not under Volvo in the brand family, but directly under Geely and therefore apart from Volvo.

However, that does not mean that the two will now be tough competitors, on the contrary. Volvo’s continued interest in Polestar ensures that the two will continue to work closely and share their technology, as they already do. According to Polestar, this is the next logical step in its development to become an independent manufacturer.
