Polestar boss Thomas Ingenlath confirmed this in an interview with the portal Automotive industry a strategy to align Volvo’s Swedish-Chinese sister brand as a premium service provider.

“People spend a lot of money to buy a car in the premium segment. And I think we offer good value in terms of equipment and technology,” said Ingenlath. Polestar is “the first European brand with a Scandinavian flair”. The attitude is “design and innovation”, which would benefit driving.

Cars should not be computers on wheels, but to achieve the “emotional expectation of driving”. That is also a big difference to his colleagues in the manufacturer Volvo, which also belongs to the Chinese Geely Group. “Our interior is more technical, a little more ‘German’,” explained the CEO. “In recent years we have freed ourselves from Volvo. Today we look more at the whole Geely group and choose the best from the Polestar portfolio. However, Volvo’s influence remains strong with a share of 18 percent.

Polestar invests in its products and sales, but does not build its factories, said Ingenlath. “We don’t have to worry about the production sites because the group has this infrastructure in place. The participation of Volvo and Geely ensures that we have access to these resources. The plants in the United States and the Renault plant in South Korea will be added in the future.

In addition to the Polestar 2 mid-size sedan, which has been sold since 2020, the brand now offers two SUVs. “Polestar is definitely not just an SUV brand,” emphasized the CEO. In the coming years, sports models will be presented on their platform with the large sedan Polestar 5 and Roadster 6, which are planned as GT and convertible. They are currently being developed in the UK.

Polestar doesn’t have to “sell several hundred thousand cars” to meet its expectations. The CEO explained that the goal is to break the 155,000 mark and beyond next year. According to previous plans, sales were supposed to increase to 290,000 electric vehicles per year in 2025, but recently there was only talk of 150,000 to 160,000 units. In 2023, 54,600 electric vehicles were sold, which represents an increase of six percent.

Regarding the policy of electric cars in Europe, Ingenlath said: “I am outraged and very disappointed by the confusion. This is certainly not the way in which the urgently needed mobility can be promoted. America shows how it works. There is no point in protecting an old industry and old technology from change.
