The successor to Polestar 2 is not called Polestar 2 (and that makes a lot of sense depending on the brand)

Polestar 2 has been on the market since 2020 and is expected to be released in 2027. Its successor is already in the works, but most surprisingly it is not called Polestar 2.

The current Polestar 2 got a facelift recently, but in 2027 it will be done with Polestar’s first EV model (the Polestar 1 was a plug-in hybrid). Because the Volkswagen Golf has been called the Golf since the Eighty Years’ War and the name Toyota Corolla was found in the Egyptian pyramids, you’d expect that the successor to the Polestar 2 would also be called that, but nothing could be further from the truth.

According to CEO Thomas Ingenlath, the brand chooses a completely different naming strategy. In conversation with the British Motor vehicle announces that the Polestar 2 will be replaced by an all-new car called … the Polestar 7.

Polestar 7: a conscious choice

Polestar carefully chose a completely new name. According to Ingenlath, the same name for many generations of the model can prevent innovation: “By giving the successor of Polestar 2 a different number, our manufacturers and designers will not be confused by the old name and stuck in the concept of the current model,” explains the CEO outside.

The Polestar 2 is now on Volvo’s CMA platform, but the Polestar 7 will reportedly be on parent company Geely’s SEA platform. This platform is currently used, among other things, Zeekr 001, the Volvo EX30 in the Polestar 4.

Polestar name strategy

Instead of model names, Polestar opts for a numerical approach. The Polestar 2 is a hatchback, the Polestar 3 is a large SUV (top left photo), the Polestar 4 is a coupe-style SUV (top right photo) and the Polestar 5 (bottom left photo) is a sedan that will compete with the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan. The Polestar 6 is an open-top sports car (pictured below right) and to complete the mess, the successor to the Polestar 2 will be called the Polestar 7. We sense a bit of an identity crisis coming…
