The #Porsche Penske Motorsport team is sending the new Porsche 963 into the battle for overall victory in the world’s greatest endurance race. From 2023, 2 #hybrid #models according to LMDH regulations will start in #FIA Endurance #Championship WEC and #IMSA Weather Tech Sports Car Championship.
The #racing car presented on Friday, June 24, 2022 at #Goodwood in England has the same colors as Porsche in motorsport: white, red and black. In the cockpits of the 500 kilowatt cars, experienced #prototypes #champions compete with proven pilots from the Porsche works driver squad. Porsche Penske Motorsport organizes activities in two locations: the Mannheim branch (Germany) is responsible for the FIA WEC, in #US Mooresville (North Carolina) cars are prepared for IMSA.
“After 7,889 kilometers of testing in the first half of 2022, we see ourselves on the right track, but there is still work to be done before the start of next season,” emphasizes Thomas Laudenbach, Head of #Motorsport. »Our new Porsche 963 should build on the great success of legendary models such as the 917, 935, 956, 962 or 919 Hybrid. I am sure that we will be well organized in the technical area and have also created the right structures on the part of the team to be able to win in an exciting competition between many manufacturers and different concepts.«
The Porsche 963’s official race debut is scheduled for January 2023 at the 24 Hours of Daytona in the USA. Meanwhile, the FIA WEC has opened the doors to test runs as part of the upcoming World Championship rounds this year. Porsche Penske Motorsport is aiming for a potential out-of-competition practice at the season finale in Bahrain in November.
“Over the past few months, the employees of Porsche Motorsport and Team Penske have grown into a highly functional and dedicated team, Team Porsche Penske Motorsport,” says Urs Kuratle, Head of Motorsport Factory LMDh. “We will have a strong pair of drivers in four works cars. We are making great progress in cooperation with our long-term tire partner Michelin and chassis manufacturer Multimatic. The Porsche 963 will be assembled in the autumn. Until then, we want to make further progress in the reserves testing and gaining more knowledge. It’s hard to wait for the first mission.”
Experienced factory drivers Kévin Estre (France), Michael Christensen (Denmark), André Lotterer (Germany), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), Matt Campbell (Australia), Mathieu Jaminet (France) and the two experienced #sportscar #driver Dane Cameron (USA) and Felipe Nasr (Brazil). In the initial phase of development, Frédéric Makowiecki took a leading role. The Frenchman drove the first ever meters in a Porsche 963 at the launch in Weissach in January and also completed the first laps in the simulator. In the future, other experienced drivers will assist the cockpit crew in long-distance races at Daytona, Sebring and at the Atlanta Speedway (“Petit Le Mans”).
Porsche Penske Motorsport is preparing two 963s for the world’s largest auto racing series in Mooresville, North Carolina, and Mannheim, Germany. The WEC base in Baden-Württemberg was built in the former Porsche and Penske Automotive facility according to the latest standards. A high-performance data line connects the team’s bases in Mooresville and Mannheim with Porsche’s development center in Weissach. The exchange of data between the three state-of-the-art Porsche Penske Motorsport centers takes place in near real time. The WEC team will move to Mannheim in the autumn of this year.
Jonathan Diuguid is the Managing Director of Porsche Penske Motorsport. “The expectations are very high,” the American knows. “Not only from the public, but also from Porsche and Penske, who together have written great stories in motorsport in the past.” Diuguid and Travis Law (Director of Competition) lead the international Porsche Penske Motorsport team and lead the management in WM endurance. as well as in the #IMSA series. The team in the FIA WEC is led by Bernhard Demmer (General Manager) and Francis Schammo (Team Manager), in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in North America Joel Svensson (Team Manager) is responsible.
As specified by the LMDH regulations, the Porsche 963 is based on a chassis from the LMP2 category. Porsche is working with the Canadian high-tech company Multimatic on a new developed car base. Standard hybrid components are contributed by Bosch, Williams Advanced Engineering and Xtrac. The heart of the car is 4.6 liter #V8 #Biturbo. The engine is based on the 918 Spyder hybrid sports car. Its #DNA goes back to the RS Spyder racing car, with which Porsche and the Penske team celebrated many successes from 2005 to 2008. The design of the new Porsche 963 is based on the winning classics 956 and 962 of the 1980s. At the rear, a continuous light strip represents the modern highlight of the ninth-eleventh generation of the 992. The car’s design in white, red and black emphasizes the references to successful Porsche racing cars. And another tradition continues: the new Porsche 963 will be available to customers from the first year of use. The first Porsche customer teams will be communicating their plan in the next few days.
