Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart: The beginning of the classic tennis game

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is currently in its 47th year. We look back at the beginning.

One person in particular has gone missing this year. Dieter Fischer, the father of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, can no longer participate in the 47th edition, which is being held in Stuttgart these days. The tennis visionary died in February at the age of 85, which is why the tournament is being held for the first time without his founding father.

The late 1970s was a time when indoor tennis courts were springing up everywhere. This is also the case in the Plattenhardt district of Filderstadt. Fischer, the owner of a pharmacy in Bernhausen, held a party with four professional players in his newly built hall in Plattenhardt in 1977. This developed into one of the best and most popular tournaments on the women’s tour to date. Fischer had appealed to many sponsors at the time, but only Porsche listened to him for “a special sporting event with a personal touch”.

In 2002, Fischer sold the rights to host the race to former sponsor Porsche. The move to Stuttgart took place in 2006. “In Filderstadt,” says competition director Markus Günthardt, “competitions would have had no future. But we have been able to preserve the DNA until today.“
