Cupra Tavascan – there was a model, it is a step in the future

Cupra has announced its first all-electric SUV coupe and its second zero-emission model after the compact Borna. Interestingly, the Cupra Tavascan is a model derived directly from the concept car of the same name, presented for the first time at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019. Four years ago, it was hailed as a “dream” for bringing to market a unique vision of the future of Spanish brand electricity. Today, according to the manufacturer itself, the production version is the stylistic and technological predecessor of the next models from the Martorell company. Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra, comments:

Electricity distribution is a global trend in which our brand is also investing. By 2030, the Cupra fleet will be fully electric. There will be many electric cars on the market. What we want from Cupra cars is not only the latest technologies, but also good design. We want to show the world that electric cars can also be attractive and sporty. Thanks to the Cupra Tavascan model, our dream is coming true.

Design, a stunning SUV with brass accents

The SUV from Cupra is a perfect example of the new design language of the brand, which is emphasized by the sporty body line. The new LED lights at the front, consisting of three triangles, are the hallmark of the new style. The strong and muscular lines of the Tavascan exterior are carried over to the interior, which strikes the perfect balance between driver orientation and passenger comfort.

While the car looks very large, it still has a lot of class – and in addition to the new lights at the front, you should also consider the lights at the back of the SUV. The interior also looks modern – apart from the small display behind the steering wheel, there is a powerful 15-inch tablet in the middle of the dashboard, the largest in all models of the brand. The screen is operated by voice or touch, but can be adjusted according to the personal needs of the driver – it is integrated with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers a Wireless Full Link system.

Of course, the steering wheel has two iconic buttons on the sides, and we can’t forget about the combination of silver gray / matt and copper color is also found on the mark. A combination of comfort and forward thinking.

Strong and diverse, ie the main course

But let’s get to the real meat. Tavascan will be available in two power versions: 210 kW (286 HP) and 250 kW (340 HP). The most powerful difference will be provided by the all-wheel drive, which will ensure better traction in all road conditions and even more reliable driving. The ability to transfer torque between all four wheels increases not only driving characteristics and driving confidence, but also acceleration times. The car accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.6 seconds.

Regarding the battery, the Spanish SUV has a traction battery with a net capacity of 77 kWh, which provides approximately 550 km. The all-wheel drive version is expected to take about 517 km. The manufacturer informs that the long range of the model is also due to the efficiency of energy recovery and the optional heat pump, which works more efficiently than the classic heating system.

Cupra also boasts that its second fully electric car in the Spanish brand’s range can get an extra 100 kilometers in just 7 minutes thanks to fast charging. When the energy in the traction battery is reduced to only 10%, it can be recharged to 80% in less than half an hour using a charging stage with a capacity of at least 135 kW.

The chassis is also surprisingly good

Tavascan has a length of 464.4 cm, a width of 186.1 cm, a height of 159.7 cm and a wheelbase of 276.6 cm. The new model’s powertrain is configured for driver interaction and a unique driving experience. A positive feeling behind the wheel is provided by the DCC Sport suspension and progressive power steering. Additionally, the accessory tires mounted on 21-inch forged aluminum rims provide a sporty driving experience.

Tavascan is an important step towards brand electrification. The Spanish SUV joins the CUPRA Born with six plug-in hybrid models, including: CUPRA Leon, CUPRA Leon Sportstourer and CUPRA Formentor. The new model will hit the streets in 2024, and its price will be PLN 295,900 and PLN 278,790, depending on the version. The car was also shown at the last Extreme E race in Sardinia.
