Production breaks for Fiat and Maserati models

Stellantis stops production at the Mirafiori factory in Turinwhich makes the Fiat New 500 electric minivan and Maserati cars as demand has fallen.

Production at the factory was halted this week and will be suspended again from October 19 to November 3said a Stellantis representative.

Two assembly lines

The Mirafiori factory has two assembly lines and builds 500 and four new Maserati models. Maserati cars built at the factory are the Levante large SUV, the Granturismo large coupe, and the Ghibli and Quattroporte large sedans.

Both lines will stop, affecting 2,400 workers who will be temporarily laid off.

The New 500 was the third best-selling electric car in Europe in 2022but its sales have declined this year with the arrival of new competitors.

New 500 sales in Europe fell 1.7 percent to 41,217 in the first eight months, according to market analysts Dataforce. It was the sixth electric car to sell in the post Tesla Model Y, VW ID.4, Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3 and MG4.

Fiat planned to build around 100,000 New 500s at Mirafiori this year.

A few days ago it became known that Volkswagen will stop the production of electric cars VW ID.3 and Cupra Born at its factories in Zwickau and Dresden, Germany in the first two weeks of October due to low demand.

Maserati’s aging line

Maserati models built in Miafiori have been eaten in Europe, and Levante sales down 65% until August to 604 units. According to the FIM union, Maserati’s assembly line in Mirafiori has been closed 58 working days in the first term.

Production of the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans will end in December. The Quattroporte is due to be replaced by a new generation in 2024, which will include a battery-electric version. The Ghibli will not be replaced.

The Levante SUV will be replaced by a new model in 2025.

Maserati’s global sales rose 41% to 14,500 in the first half, boosted by Grecale medium SUV of the brand, which is built in Cassino, Italy, along with the Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan and the Stelvio midsize SUV.
