Chevrolet ready to test its first hydrogen pictures

According to the Chevrolet Silverado, General Motors’ first hydrogen-powered pickup truck will soon hit the road. Designed to travel approximately 500 kilometers on a full tank, they will be used on Southern Company construction sites in the United States.

Already tied with Honda to supply fuel cells for the new CR-V hydrogen, American group General Motors is announcing the launch of the first pilot program aimed at the pickup.
Aimed at testing hydrogen in real-world conditions, the program represents a total investment of $65 million, including $26 million from the Department of Energy’s SuperTruck 3 program.

About 500 kilometers of freedom

To create its big picture, General Motors didn’t start from a blank sheet of paper. Built on the same chassis as the Chevrolet Silverado 5500, the vehicles will be equipped with Hydrotec, the manufacturer’s hydrogen subsidiary.

While the technical details have not yet been revealed at this stage, GM indicates that the vehicles will be based on an 800-volt architecture and will be able to produce a peak power of more than 300 kW. On a full tank, the maximum range can be over 300 miles, or about 480 km.

Hydrogen ecosystem

Considered one of the largest utility companies in the United States, Southern Company will use these hydrogen-powered Chevrolet Silverados on its job sites as workshop vehicles.
In partnership with GM, Nel ASA and its subsidiary Georgia Power, Southern Company will also demonstrate a hydrogen microgrid. The idea is to create green hydrogen at off-peak times and use it for power operations.

General Motors isn’t the only major manufacturer interested in hydrogen graphics. Stellantis plans to enter the US market at the end of this decade, while Toyota has partnered with Ricardo to deliver the first working prototype.
