His electric cars in the eyes of justice

The German company, a former distributor of Volkswagen, is suing the Wolfsburg-based company over the use of the acronym “ID” for its electric vehicles.

This is definitely an event that Volkswagen would do well. It faces a clear decline in its sales of electric vehicles in recent months, especially since the end of the ecological bonus in GermanyThe manufacturer must now take legal action led by one of its former service providers.

Frustration in the air?

Indeed, Identytec, a German company specializing in innovation, has filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen. The company promotes the fact that the Wolfsburg brand uses the acronym for its electric vehicles, knowing that it was previously used by Identytec. This is also stated in the press release sent by the company: “Volkswagen Group, which was one of our customers, bought some of our branded products. and I cannot claim that we are not aware of our use of this abbreviation”.
So Identytec believes that Volkswagen has very clearly stolen its acronym since 2019 with the launch of ID.3. The company provides as proof the brands it uses, such as ID.Connector, ID.Shelf, ID.Tag, ID.Add, ID.Weigh, ID.Laser or even ID.Track. The two companies, however, tried to find an amicable agreement, but according to Identytec, they have not succeeded. In turn, Volkswagen filed a trademark application in November 2017. And the funniest part of this whole story, it is the Wolfsburg company that struck the first blow before this legal action.

A series of mistakes made by Volkswagen

Indeed, in September 2019, Volkswagen filed the first complaint with the Patent and Trademark Office against the three Identytec brands. Except at the same time, in the case of Wolfsburg, we see that the brands of Identitytec are older than those of Volkswagen. Then the representatives agreed “to be wrong”.
This move could therefore be a form of revenge on the part of Identytec, but not exactly according to the German company’s spokesperson.

In fact, their motivations are different: “There is confusion among our partners and customers about the range of Volkswagen IDs and the company’s products. This may suggest that we are copying the Volkswagen ID series, where this is not the case.
