An extensive recall of electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis

A problem with the 12-volt battery in several electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis is currently forcing the manufacturer to recall a large number of models.

We are talking about 600,000 worldwide, including 170,000 in South Korea, 147,000 in the United States and 26,000 in Canada.

Targeted models include those based on the e-GMP platform, ie Hyundai IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6,, Let EV6 (but notEV9apparently) and Genesis GV60together with Genesis GV70 Electrified and Electric G80from 2022 to 2024.

What exactly is the problem? The car can be damaged if the 12 volt battery goes out, even though it does not provide power to the electric motors. This is the fault of the Integrated Charging Unit (ICCU), which can be damaged over time and with current changes.

As we wrote before, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States opened an investigation in April 2023 after receiving a series of complaints from drivers saying they have experienced a partial or total loss of power. Hyundai, for its part, began investigating the issue in October 2022.

When a problem occurs, the driver is notified by a message on the dashboard and, through an integrated protection mechanism, has a maximum of 45 minutes to stop in a safe place.

Affected owners will receive a notice later this spring and should take their vehicle to their local Hyundai, Kia or Genesis dealer to update the ICCU software to prevent excessive power. If necessary, the ICCU fuse will also be replaced.
