With the XCeed, Kia had a good nose almost three years ago. The crossover variant is now the best-selling in the series. It is unprecedented for any other Asian manufacturer to rely on this version of the body in the compact class (C segment). A little higher than usual, more chic and lifestyle, the concept is suitable.

In addition, Kia even offers the XCeed as a plug-in hybrid, the combination that 45 percent of buyers choose. The XCeed even won the “Golden Steering Wheel”, received various design awards and was the car with the lowest wear and tear in its class. So everything went well.

The XCeed makes a bella figura from the front and back.

As planned, Kia plans to revise the model after three years. The five-door, station wagon and Shooting Brake have already passed, now it’s the XCeed’s turn. Since there was no design criticism from the client’s side, there was no need to worry too much about the eyes. A little makeup on the front and back is enough.

Everything new with lights

The grill was given a different contour, new LED lights and fog lights combined with other air intakes (air curtains) are intended to ensure a “stronger appearance”, as it is always true in the press from manufacturers. Games sell well. Therefore, the lights were adjusted back and a new diffuser was attached.

You also have to double check in the cockpit to see the changes. The instrument cluster behind the steering wheel has new graphics, there’s a favorites button on the steering wheel that you can press and hold to quickly activate certain controls, and the reversing camera can now be activated without having to use reverse gear.

Kia took the opportunity to modernize the XCeed in terms of software as well. Previously you had to drive to a dealer to get new map material or a multimedia system update, this is now possible “over the air” (OTA). Free, however, only twice in the first year after purchase. The software update also includes new online services. For example, you can save your favorite football club in the system and receive live information during the game.

The XCeed is still available with three petrol engines (120 to 204 hp), a diesel with 136 hp and as a plug-in hybrid with a system output of 141 hp. We chose the latter model for our test car. In E mode, of course, the XCeed shows its quiet side. In the best case, about 50 km can be covered, but in most cases it should end after about 40 km.

The current range is no longer updated

A track that is no longer updated compared to the competition. Even the Kia Niro has significantly more. But the whole thing is because of the old platform on which the XCeed stands. Battery capacity greater than 9 kWh cannot be accommodated in the vehicle. More would also mean less in the trunk. However, it is more than 130 liters less than the standard combustion engine version (291 vs. 426 liters).

If the advantage of plug-in hybrid use is used, it is recommended to plug the XCeed into the socket as often as possible so that the day and the car start with a fully charged battery. Anyone who is “lazy” in this regard is giving up unnecessary fuel consumption. Seven to eight liters is not unusual. In any case, the WLTP value of 1.4 l/100 km should be forgotten, a laboratory value based on complex test procedures and calculations and far from any reality.

The Kia XCeed is very pleasant to drive, handy, compact and feels solid. Build quality and materials do not give cause for criticism. Space is clean, adults also feel in your hands back. Various enhancements and assistance systems make driving safe without warranty. New features include road assistant and traffic alert with emergency braking function.

The GT variant is only available with two more powerful petrol engines

Also new are popular GT accessories, previously available on other Kia models. It includes sports seats, custom 18-inch rims, black chrome exterior, flat-bottom steering wheel and a special honeycomb pattern in the LED lights. Unfortunately, Kia’s hardware doesn’t allow the GT line to be offered with a plug-in hybrid either. It is only available with the two most powerful petrol engines. GT and eco don’t go together.

About the subsidy: With the plug-in combination, Kia cannot currently guarantee that if you order today, the car will be delivered and registered this year. There is still hope for generous discounts. “We will come up with something in good time,” said Kia’s product management.
