The study names the largest carriers that often travel more than 400,000 km, revealing the recipe for longevity.
On the one hand, you can understand that people want cars with less than 100,000 km, but the bread is broken elsewhere when it comes to durability. These cars often reach quadruple and show that the good old recipes have not lost their validity.
The study by the American company iSeeCars traditionally focuses on cars that lead in the field of sustainability. His method is generally simple: the company analyzes data on the sale of a large number of used cars (260 million this time!) and examines the mileage that each car has sold. In doing so, it sets certain thresholds and checks how many cars of which type have crossed that threshold.
The latest analysis is truly alarming, as it analyzes data on US used car sales between 2012 and 2022, a long 10-year period, which explains the huge number of cars sold. The goal was to determine which species travel more often than 250,000 miles, or more than 400,000 kilometers. If a car hits those miles and still sells, it’s obviously permanent, but most cars never hit that number on the odometer and end up being scrapped even sooner.
The result is a list of different models based on the representation of these vehicles used in the release. If we limit ourselves to Europe, the local giants – old Volvos, Mercedes or large Volkswagens – are at the top of the list. But the study does not consider cars that are also sold in Europe, but also many others that are only or mainly available in the United States. It reveals a simple recipe for longevity that we have somewhat forgotten on the old continent.
The first 23 models are a mix of cars from different categories, of which – to the surprise of many – only four can be bought as standard in Europe or EU countries. These are at least the Toyota Land Cruiser, which has disappeared from the EU markets, and the Honda Accord, which has also left. The Honda CR-V is still on sale, but we wouldn’t bet on its current concept in terms of durability, so the last consolation seems to be the Subaru Outback, which is available and still not playing.
Indeed, a number of European cars last this long, but they cannot compete statistically with the cars listed below, because although they are often available in the same form abroad (Mercedes E-Class Series, Audi A6 or BMW, to name a few only. ), they are not part of the “crème de la creme”. In fact, we have already considered this aspect in detail: the most expensive part of the car is the engine, and the harder it is, the more it tends to stop early. Bigger and simpler engines that can be sold in the US thus pave the way for more durability that cars available in Europe can only dream of.
The first place, however, goes to the Ford F-350, which is a little unfair, since it is already a semi-trailer that, logically, lasts a long time. The aforementioned Toyota Land Cruiser was the first true passenger car, followed by a few other Toyota passenger cars. The ranks from the top five are taken again (and again, not quite the same) by the Ford F-250, Honda, again Toyota, again GMC and Chevrolet models, and again Toyota. The entire scale is a display of cars made in Japan and the United States.
Check out the full results below, that’s an impressive statistic. In theory, this could make it easier to choose your next car, but as mentioned, only four of the mentioned cars were imported or officially imported into the Czech Republic. So it is not difficult to find other types of cars, or choose directly in the United States and have your dream car imported here.
However, this study is instructive: if you want the most durable car possible, it would be wise to choose the simplest technology. A 0.9 engine with three cylinders and the same number of turbos is not meant to last long, no matter how good its mileage sheet. Anyone who denies this claim clearly knows nothing about long-term cars.
