Rolls-Royce expects the global aircraft fleet powered by Rolls-Royce engines to grow by seven to nine percent annually for the remainder of this decade. The increase in the average flight hours of those engines is predicted to be 120 to 130 percent, compared to the level of 2019 and therefore before the Corona global epidemic.

This was a shock to the airline industry and a sharp drop in sales. Due to the Corona epidemic, the group cut 9,000 jobs. In 2023, around 43,000 people were still working at the company in the UK, including around 10,000 in Germany. At Dahlewitz, the number of workers had dropped from less than 3,000 to just 2,400 in the past three years.

Now things go a little in the other direction. To prepare for the expected growth, the investment includes expanding engine capacity at Derby to deliver more than 40 per cent of new engines per year from 2025 – compared to average deliveries over the past ten years. Service capacity will also be expanded.

New engines were assembled in Dahlewitz

In Dahlewitz, Brandenburg, the existing test capacity for large civil engines will be used to cover short-term needs in the so-called MRO area, before being merged with testing of the new Trent XWB-84 engines starting there in 2026.
