A perfect weekend for Bastian Buus: The 19-year-old Dane had the best time in practice, taking a good position and winning the fifth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. After 13 laps in the summer heat on the Formula 1 track at Le Castellet, he finished nearly half a second ahead of his BWT Lechner Racing team-mate, Englishman Harry King. Third place went to defender Larry ten Voorde (GP Elite) from the Netherlands. By finishing fourth, MLuxembourg’s Dylan Pereira (BWT Lechner Racing) maintained his lead in the championship.
Despite the heat and the Mediterranean temperature exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, Bastian Buus maintained his composure. Le Castellet was only the fifth Supercup race for the 19-year-old Dane. However, the youngster from the BWT Lechner Racing team took a good position for the first time, and then started as an experienced professional and defended his position well against the rookie his colleague Harry King, who did not stop in the attack. When the safety car was left on the track during the first lap, Buus remained alert and, after restarting, took the lead behind the wheel of the 510hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
“Honestly, I messed up my start a bit and caught Harry right there. But I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t brake until he did. It was hot, but it worked” – admitted Buus, describing his first seconds of the race.
Also in the last round, the 19-year-old from the coastal town of Kolding had to fend off his opponent’s attacks.
“At the end of the race, Harry was dangerously close. His tires seemed to be in better condition than mine. I suspected it would be the end – and suddenly we were over the finish line. It was a complete surprise because I thought we had one more place ahead of us”.
Harry King praised his young teammate.
“Bastian didn’t make a single mistake that I could use. I was saving my tires for the last attack – and it almost worked… but only ‘almost’. Despite that, I am very happy with the second place” – BWT Lechner Racing driver overview from England.
Larry, Voorde, was also very relieved: the defending champion of the GP Elite team in the previous race had to retire after a flawless crash. Third place at Circuit Paul Ricard allowed him to close the gap on the championship leader.
“First of all I’d like to congratulate Bastian Buus on his first Super Cup win – with him around I feel old.” – joked the 25-year-old Dutchman.
“I’m happy to be back on stage after the bad luck at the Red Bull Ring. I don’t think much about the title yet. I just want to win the race”.
Porsche junior Laurin Heinrich from the SSR Huber Racing team crossed the finish line in fourth. After the race, however, he received a three-second penalty and lost this position – the stewards accused him of crossing the boundary of the track immediately after the start. As a result, Heinrich had to hand over his fourth place to BWT Lechner Racing’s Dylan Pereira (Luxembourg), who defended his lead in the overall results.
Congratulations to Bastian Buus: winning a race in his first Supercup season is an impressive feat that speaks volumes for his immense talent. Overall, we witnessed action-packed races and thrilling battles for positions – among the favorites and the most. Respect to the drivers and teams who worked professionally in these hot temperatures” Said Oliver Schwab, project manager of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.
In the rookie classification after five rounds of the season, Bastian Buus is still undefeated. Victory in the ProAm class at Le Castellet was achieved by the leader of this classification, Roar Lindland (Norway) in the colors of Pierre Martinet and Alméras.
Following the race at the state-of-the-art Circuit Paul Ricard, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup will move to one of the most famous venues on the Formula 1 calendar. The sixth round will take place in five weeks at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium (August 24). -26, 2022).
