Spanish Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has been the ‘winner’ of a Formula 1 training day for the British Grand Prix. It was only possible to drive carefully in the second practice, because it was dry at the time.

The British Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Lando Norris (McLaren) were the fastest behind Sainz in the Silverstone circuit. Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team need to add more speed to Sunday’s race. The Dutchman placed four times faster with teammate Sergio Perez in seventh place.

The first free exercise was ruined because of the rain. Only ten drivers could set the time. Valtteri Bottas was the fastest of them on his Alfa Romeo, but few conclusions can be drawn from that.

During the first exercise it became dry and the sun even showed itself for a while, but most drivers took it easy because half an hour later the rain again caused the pavement. Verstappen ran a total of three laps, but until then he did not come.

Verstappen late for soft tires

During the second free exercise it remained dry all the time. This gave the team a chance to try out the updates. Charles Leclerc, Sainz’s co-star in Ferrari, was faster after the first phase.

Halfway through the process, most drivers chose the softer and faster tires. Verstappen did the same, but later than others. Hamilton’s car was very playful. The Englishman managed to finish in second place in front of his own audience. Leclerc did not set any time and concluded free practice sessions with fifth place.

Verstappen is the World Cup standout with 175 points. He is ahead of number two with teammate Perez, who has 129 points. Leclerc is third with 126 points.

Sunday’s qualifying race will begin on Saturday at 4pm Dutch time. So the three free exercises are complete.
