Cupra Formentor – The best version of Skoda, Volkswagen and Seat

Cupra Formentor impresses with its design, quality and performance. It definitely stands out because of its hard work of classification. With an engine borrowed from the Audi RS3. What is a Cupra, where did it come from and why does it have 310 HP?

Cupra Formentor This is the first model of a young brand, which was launched in 2018. There is no equal in the series of Seats. However, being in such a large company, you cannot run away. That’s why Formentor is based on the MQB Evo platform. The same used by, among others, Audi A3, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golfand even Seat Leon.

The specifications are also similar to those of the company’s “competitors”. Body length is 4.45 m and wheelbase is 268 cm. Trunk capacity is 450 liters.

The main purpose of the car is to attract attention, hence the bold design, sharp lines and clear embossments. And everything that cannot be found in the more conservative brands of the group Volkswagen. Even the logo itself is bright and futuristic.

The interior is expressive and decorated with interesting details. It is also spacious and the dashboard is well laid out. Multimedia, known from other models of the Volkswagen group, has a redesigned interface, but the same operating logic can be found in them.

Where did cupra come from?

Contrary to appearances, Cupra has a history longer than itself Guardian. It can be associated with emotions and sports achievements. Kit used this name for the first time in 1996 in the Ibiza model with the 2.0 16V engine. Cupra is nothing more than Cup Racing.

In August 1999 the name Cupra it appeared on the tailgate of the more powerful and faster Seat Leon, and for the next two decades it was used on sporty variants of the Ibiza sub-model. In 2018, the company’s management decided that Cupra would be a more independent and fun brand.

Cupra Formentor – what engine?

By today’s standards, the Formentor engine range is quite large. It opens with a TSI 1.5 unit with a power of 150 HP. The next engine is 2.0 TSI with 190 HP. If we choose a more powerful version with the same engine (245 or 310 HP), it will fail Formentora will be marked VZ, ie Veloz.

At the top of this pyramid is the VZ5 variant borrowed from Audi RS3 (Video test can be found HERE) engine capacity 2.5 l. This is a legendary 5-cylinder with a power of 390 HP with a DSG gearbox of two clutches.

But that’s not all, because the Cupra Formentor is also available with a diesel engine (2.0 TDI and 150 HP).

In the tested VZ version, 310 HP is more than enough for a mid-size car for daily driving. However, Formentor has a different function. It is meant to ignite the senses and evoke joy. And you can’t deny this car while driving. The suspension is stiff and can be stiffened even more due to different driving conditions. Then the gas reaction is more intense. Engine sound and exhaust also change. It is a pity that it is electronically enhanced.

Cupra Formantor – how much does it cost?

Prices for the new Cupra Formentor start at PLN 135,000. zlotys. For the spicy models you have to pay more than PLN 200,000, and the most spicy VZ5 was valued at PLN 345,000. And although this is a lot, compared to the Audi with the same parameters, the VZ5 seems to be an attractive proposition. Especially since it can have a season and, for example, a bag Copper +, as we wrote HERE.
