  • With his Elantra, Mr. German provides emergency blood products throughout New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

BROSSARD, QC, April 10, 2024 /CNW/ – Since its debut in July 2017, the Hyundai Elantra Tim Germany he was not lazy. Currently with more than 760,000 kilometers on the odometer, the Korean sedan has traveled to the four corners of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, allowing its owner to help save lives by quickly delivering blood products classified as having a short turnaround time.

Safety first
It was primarily for safety reasons that Mr. German chose the Elantra when it came time to buy a new car in 2017. A year earlier, a road accident caused the total loss of his previous car, a 2016 Elantra. The car was badly damaged, but I and My wife and I escaped unharmed,” he says.

After the accident, Mr. German asked about safety features and learned that the 2017 Elantra (the next-generation model at the time) used a reinforced steel structure called the “Superstructure.” “That’s what really convinced me to choose this car,” explains the man who is now on his fourth Hyundai.

More than six years later, Mr. Germany does not regret its choice. “It’s the best car I’ve ever owned,” he says without hesitation.

A life-saving delivery

Every day, behind the wheel of his Elantra, which he nicknames “Angel of Darkness”, Tim Germany ensures the supply of blood products classified as having a short turnaround time that can save the lives of patients or accident victims. He was actually on the job during the 2020 fatal shooting day in Nova Scotia. “It was completely surreal. I remember being alone on the street with the police while providing emergency services. »

Often on the road at night, Mr. German suffered several inevitable mishaps with his “Angel of Darkness,” hitting various obstacles and animals in his path. “I had to replace four front bumpers, a rear bumper, a hood and two windshield washer reservoirs,” he lists. “The Elantra also absorbed the impact of two deer, a cow, a rabbit, two raccoons, a helmet and even a piece of metal that came off the truck,” he continues.

Throughout his time on the road, Mr. German has even helped people outside of donating his blood products. “One of my proudest moments behind the wheel Angel of Darkness It happened on my way back from Queen’s Hospital Elizabeth of Prince Edward Island and saw the smoke rising above the trees a little further down the road,” explains Mr. German. “When I turned the corner, I saw a car burning in the ditch. A woman was trapped inside the car and did not appear to be in a very good condition. I stopped and ran to the car trying to get the lady out as quickly as the car was completely engulfed in flames. Another woman stopped to help, and we pulled the occupant out to safety. A passer-by stopped and helped put out the fire. I managed to get the lady’s bag out of the car and gave it to the paramedics. »

Despite all the obstacles facing the “Angel of Darkness” and the high mileage of its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, Mr. German says he is pleased with the quality and reliability of his Elantra. Low fuel consumption, which has changed between 6.5 and 7L/100 km since its purchase, also allows Mr. German de travel all this distance cheaply.

Maintenance, the key to success
For Mr. Germany, the reliability of his 2017 Elantra is no accident. Although he admits that the quality of his car plays a role in this, he points out that it is thanks to diligent maintenance that he has been able to achieve high mileage. “A wise man told me that if you take care of your car, your car will take care of you. This man was my father, who taught auto mechanics for many years,” says German. “All this time on the road, I have to change the oil at least once a month,” he explains, adding that he also makes sure to check the filters and other fluid levels regularly.

With more than 760,000 kilometers on the odometer, the 2017 Elantra is starting to attract the attention and curiosity of mechanics. “When I make an appointment for service, they are often very interested in the mileage and the good condition of the car and ask me all kinds of questions,” he says happily with a laugh. “I also thought that since the circumference of the Earth is 40,075 km, this big car would have circled the Earth 19 times in less than six years. This is very impressive, even for me!”

Today, Mr. German says he wants to keep driving his “Angel of Darkness” for as long as possible, though he knows he’ll eventually consider buying a future car. Meanwhile, his two daughters have also followed suit and both drive Hyundais, one Elantra and the other Santa Fe.
