I rode the “All New Range Rover Sport”, the third generation of the Range Rover Sport, which returned as a fully revised model after 10 years. The Range Rover Sport, launched in 2005, established itself as a luxury SUV with a luxurious signature. of Range Rover in a powerful and powerful design. This third-generation model attracted attention by selling only 1,000 units in the initial contract before its official release in Korea.
The all-new Range Rover Sports test run started in central Seoul and extended along highways and public roads for about 300 kilometers to Cheonan Asan Station in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. As it was raining heavily in the city area on the day of the test drive, I was able to check the off-road driving comfort by driving on wet roads and falls that turned into muddy roads.
The model tested this time is “P360 Dynamic HSE” and its price is around 150 million won. The new Range Rover Sport was launched in four models: P360 Dynamic SE, P360 Dynamic HSE, P360 Autobiography and D300 Dynamic HSE, powered by the I6 Ingenium petrol and diesel engine with a mild hybrid system (MHEV).
The 48V MHEV system engine is used for the new Range Rover Sport. The P360 model with the I6 Ingenium gasoline engine has a maximum power of 360hp and a maximum torque of 51kg-lb. Zero to 100 km (time 0 to 100 km/h) is 6 seconds. The D300 model, equipped with the I6 Ingenium diesel engine, has a maximum power of 300 hp and a maximum torque of 66.3 kg.m., and returns with a zero time of 6.6 seconds.
Looking at the exterior, Land Rover’s signature grille, signature daytime running lights (DRL) and LED digital taillights are visible. The design of the side windows and body panels, which blend seamlessly with the gently sloping rear fascia, is a hallmark of the Range Rover Sport.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, the design of the cockpit is similar to that of an airplane cockpit, and the general details can be clearly seen. It has design elements seen on the new Range Rover, such as a horizontal instrument cluster and a curved 13.1-inch screen.
The 13.1-inch curved screen, the largest in Range Rover history, allows easy control of many functions while driving with haptic vibration feedback (haptic feedback). Still, there was a remote mode when pressing the garden help screen (circling the screen) and selecting the buttons on the right. I thought that if the screen is slightly oriented towards the driver, it will be easier to press the buttons and view the contents of the screen.
Below the screen, there is a wireless charger for the smartphone. A smartphone with a cover fits in a small space. There is a feeling of spaciousness, so when I get out of the car after driving, I forget that my smartphone was charging with my head down.
The air conditioner is located directly under the charger. After pressing the dial button, you can rotate it left and right to select the wind speed of the ventilated seat and cool/warm air. If you drag the button to the left or right, you can control the temperature of the room, such as turning on the heater and air conditioner. The dial button is intuitive enough to easily control the temperature while driving.
The climate control button between the contact buttons is similar to the capacitive touch method that works when you touch your hand, but it is a button that must be pressed firmly. I had to use more force than expected to activate the function.
At that time I started driving on bad roads that were muddy due to heavy rains in the capital area. To use the ‘Mud’ driving mode on the new Range Rover Sport, we first changed the driving mode to ‘Mud’.
The suspension height is adjusted to a maximum of 2 Off-Road. It can be adjusted in 4 stages: Low and Low Ride, Total, Off-Road 1 and 2. Range Rover Sport Dynamic Suspension can increase the driving distance. down to 135 mm. When it meets a waterway when driving off-road, it can travel up to 900mm deep.
When I switched to mud mode, the suspension felt stiffer. Holds the car body firmly without slipping on muddy roads. Even crossing the pond, I managed to pass without much shock. The new Range Rover Sport is equipped with an Air Dynamic Suspension system that provides adjustable air springs for the first time for the brand, demonstrating excellent handling on muddy roads, as well as driving at high speeds and on public roads.
When passing a low rubber barrier or crossing a small hole on a road section, it went smoothly without shaking. There was a slight hum when going over the natural hump, but no vibrations or vibrations were heard. Even when crossing bumps, the air suspension controls the body well. Land Rover explained: “Applied to Range Rover Sport, Adaptive Dynamics 2 technology monitors road conditions 500 times per second and continuously controls two active fluids to reduce unnecessary body movement for better driving comfort.”
The semi-autonomous driving function worked smoothly. The job of keeping the distance and keeping the car in the middle of the lane was also good.
however, the operation of the asylum support was not easy. It was raining heavily and the road surface was wet so driver intervention was required. I had to brake because I was going in a different direction than expected or because I was too close to a car parked next to me.
The test car had no rear steering wheel. Rear wheel steering is a function that reduces the turning radius when making a U-turn or parking by moving the front and rear wheels in opposite directions. The company makes it clear that, in order to use it, you must select the Extreme Handling Package as an option.
This package includes the Stormer Handling Pack Dynamic Response Pro, four-wheel steering and an electronically controlled differential with torque vectoring. Even without the extra options, I didn’t experience the big car’s discomfort when parking or when making U-turns during the test drive.
Before the test, I expected a powerful sound from a unique sports-style engine, but it was silence that unexpectedly appeared when driving on public roads. In the low to medium speed section, you reach a point where you can feel the silence except for a little wind noise.
When I changed the driving mode to “Dynamic”, I heard a completely different engine sound. The loud engine sound heard when the accelerator pedal is pressed adds to the excitement of driving.
The local launch price of the new Range Rover Sport, which includes a 5-year service plan package, is 139.97 million won for the P360 Dynamic SE, 150.67 million won for the P360 Dynamic HSE and D300 Dynamic HSE and 158.07 million won for the P360 Dynamic SE . P360 CV (3.5% individual consumption tax applies).
