MHS baseball sweeps the triangle in Dodge CIty | Sports


Manhattan High baseball came off a weekend trip to the southwestern part of the state with a doubleheader, defeating Garden City and Dodge City in a triangular on Saturday.

The Indians (9-3) beat the Buffaloes (5-5) 9-3 before outlasting the Red Demons (5-6) 8-1.

Against Garden City, the Indians gave up an early run in the bottom of the first inning before piling on six runs in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead.

The Buffaloes added a run in the bottom of the third, but the Indians got that run back in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth and added two more runs in the top of the sixth with one out. Jake Wolcott scored Carter Aslin and a sacrifice fly from Sam Spiegel scored Sawyer Newton.

Garden City hit the bottom of the sixth inning.

Landon Ott got the start and got the win, going three innings, allowing three hits and two walks with one earned run and three strikeouts.

Brayson Gnirk pitched the final four innings, allowing a run on five hits and walking three strikeouts.

Aslin and Jackson Goos each recorded two hits in the game, with three RBIs for Goos and two walks for Aslin.

Landon Duff reached with three walks.

Then, against Dodge City, the Indians went on a 3-0 run after five innings before exploding for five runs in the top of the seventh.

The Indians scored their first run in the top of the second on a single by Eric Tiede that scored Duff.

In the top of the third, Goos’ single scored Aslin for a 2-0 lead and a wild pitch scored Wolcott, making it 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the seventh, Goos singled in Wolcott before scoring two runs later on a fielder’s choice after a groundout from Owen Goode.

Spiegel then scored the next goal on a third down, and last, but not least, Aslin plated Brandon Stroud and Duff, pushing the MHS lead to 8-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Dodge City made it to the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice, but Wolcott’s walk-off grounder ended the innings and the game.

Spiegel got off to a winning start, pitching six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and walking three strikeouts.

Aslin, Wolcott and Goos each had two hits. Both of Wolcott’s hits were doubles.

Next, the Indians will host Washburn Rural (8-5) on Wednesday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
