SsangYong XLV 1.6 – SUV at a good price (Test, Reviews, Details)

When we stopped for photos and refueled during the test, many curious people surrounded the Ssangyong XLV. They looked at it from all sides, they looked at the marks, they were surprised or surprised. In the end, many could not stand it and asked: what is this brand? Our answer: Korean SsangYong.

Ssangyong XLV is a small SUV that was created after the body of the Tivoli was extended by 24 cm. Both cars have the same wheelbase and wheelbase (2600 and 1555 mm respectively) and width (1798 mm). So the extra centimeters came just behind the rear axle.

We thought it worth considering whether the Tivoli and XLV are of the same segment, as they only differ in height and boot capacity. If so, which one? Tivoli’s competitors have a shorter wheelbase: Mokka – 2555 mm, 2008 – 2538 mm, while XLV’s rivals are slightly larger: Sportage and Tucson – 2670 mm.

Another question: Won’t XLV customers be disappointed that they’re just paying more for a bigger trunk? In our opinion, no, because the price difference between these models is only PLN 4,000.

SsangYong XLV – the largest luggage compartment in its class

According to SsangYong, the cargo area of the XLV is about 720 liters. This is a value that cannot be found in competitors (Sportage – 503 l, Tucson – 513 l, Tiguan – 615 l). We doubted if it was true, but representatives of the importer in Poland claim that it complies with VDA standards. It was calculated with the rear seats in the normal position and the cargo compartment floor on the lower level.

When it is placed on top (makes the surface even with the backs of the seats), the capacity is 574 liters. According to the calculations, the storage under the floor is about 150 liters (16 cm high). After folding the backrests, we have a maximum volume of 1,440 liters. In this configuration of seats, rivals offer: Sportage – 1,662 l, Tucson – 1,503 l, Tiguan – 1,655 l.

We thought that the Ssangyong XLV is a budget car, so we were pleasantly surprised by the design of the board and its performance. There is no axial adjustment of the steering wheel, but there are no problems with finding the right position, especially since the ergonomics of the seats are exemplary.

The test SsangYong XLV had a front-wheel drive (4×4 option for PLN 7,000) and a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with a timing chain. The original 128 HP engine provides decent dynamics, although some complained that in the lower rev range the car “didn’t drive”. This is true, but remember that this is a common feature of free engines. Average fuel consumption is 1.5 l / 100 km above, according to the manufacturer’s guarantee.

The SsangYong XLV obeys the driver’s commands and its behavior in curves is predictable. Of course, compared to rivals such as Tucson or Tiguan, driving accuracy is worse, but compared to Dacia Duster – better. In terms of comfort: the Quartz version has 16-inch wheels (205/60) as standard and the suspension comfort is at a good level. The “18s” option (Style Package) looks better, but reduces ride comfort.

We love the SsangYong XLV

Attractive purchase price, good level of equipment, 5-year warranty, spacious and functional interior, large trunk, higher quality than in Dacia.

We don’t like the SsangYong XLV

Engine dynamics in low revs, precision steering, no electronic assistants and axial reg. the steering wheel.

SsangYong XLV our opinion

A customer came to a SsangYong showroom, chose a car, took a test drive, negotiated a price. Satisfied, he returns home, proud of his wife and son that he ordered a SsangYong. Those – by betraying him with divorce and moving – will order him to withdraw from the contract. How to convince Poles for an unknown Korean brand? It is a difficult task but possible. Hyundai and Kia did it!
