And he may just have found himself as the dark horse of the 2000 Guineas in the form of the impressive Speech.

Buick smiled: “He’s a very smart horse, he had them covered in steps.

“It’s been raining everywhere and we were hesitant to run him on the test field.

“He’s done all his wins in all weathers but he’ll be fine on the field, as long as it’s a good surface because he’s a good mover.

“I think he’s opened up a few options here, he’s really fast and he’s got a lot of talent. He’s a good, fast runner to watch.”

Appleby’s leading Guineas hope so far has been Ancient Wisdom, who carried the Group 1 Futurity over heavy ground at Doncaster late last season.

Buick added: “It’s a different breed. Old Wisdom covers the cut and will get over the mile, while this guy is faster. I’ll leave any plans to Charlie.”
