Cupra Formentor VZ5 is not only a sports model, it is a crossover with an Audi RS 3 engine

Cupra Formentor VZ5 is not only a sporty look, although it is also a very strong point of this car. The matte body paint (it’s worth noting that it’s more difficult to maintain than the usual metallic paint), bronze-colored inserts, 20-inch rims, and four exhaust tips do their job and the whole thing looks great. It’s a crossover, so it still has very high ground clearance (albeit 10mm lower than the VZ), which means you don’t have to be very careful when parking to avoid damaging the carbon pieces on the front bumper. But let’s get to the merits of the case.

Cupra Formentor VZ5 – a rare sight

Under the hood of the Formentor VZ5 is an unusual engine – 2.5 TSI from the Audi RS 3 and RS Q3. Somehow, the Cupra bosses managed to get it from the Germans, who have not made this unit available to other brands until now. Although slightly weaker than the Cupra – it does not reach the magic limit of 400 HP – the Formentor is still unique. Compared to the Cupra Leon or Ateca with a 2.0 TSI engine, it has not only a larger capacity of 0.5 l, but also one more cylinder and about +80 HP (also +80 Nm).

This changes a lot, both in terms of sound and performance. Indeed, the Formentor VZ5-horsepower 390 is not a slow car (VZ, or “veloz”, means fast in Spanish). Accelerating at full speed pushes you into the seat. It is not surprising, because it takes only 4.2 seconds to reach 100 km / h This is already high. A dual-clutch gearbox and AWD drive, standard in this variant, also contribute to this. But it’s not just the engine and acceleration that’s great.

Cupra Formentor VZ5 – description and calculation of versatility

The entire cockpit is the same as the Seat Leon, but in this case it doesn’t matter because the Cupra has brought a lot of modifications. First, the interior colors match the bodywork – the seats, door panels and the entire upper part of the dashboard are blue. Secondly, the steering wheel, which – like in big cars – has a button to start the engine, adds a sporty touch (a similar solution can be found, for example, on the Audi R8). In fact, at first, out of habit, I pressed a separate button on the central console, which was used to turn off the traction control …

Under the second steering wheel there is a button to select the driving mode. It’s easy, you don’t have to click the menu on the screen or look for the switch somewhere else. You can quickly change engine response, gearbox operation, power steering assistance, suspension damping level, as well as torque distribution and ESC operation. The change from “Comfort” to “Sport” is clearly visible. The steering wheel actually puts up more resistance, the gearbox immediately “downshifts” a gear or two and keeps the engine revs up. In addition, the shock absorbers become stiffer and the exhaust becomes more rumbling. And that’s it! In “Cupra” mode, it is stronger, and the gearbox switches to manual mode, so you can “click” the paddles.

Still not everything. In the VZ5 version we have almost “buckets” of high performance from Sabelt. They are deep, have a fixed headrest, a carbon back part finished with holes for harness belts (standard seat belts are standard). The driver and front passenger can feel like they are in a racing car, but more importantly the seats are not too hard. In my opinion, they are more comfortable than the regular ones because they have higher seats. You can easily go on long trips in this car, it will be comfortable. The only condition: you must be thin enough to fit into them.

Cupra Formentor VZ5

Overall, the Cupra Formentor VZ5 proves to be an amazing everyday car. It is not tiring when driving an ordinary city car – just select the “Comfort” mode and it will be pleasant. It is a car with two natures – one quiet, one can even say one family (the interior is quite spacious and the trunk capacity is 420 liters), and one wild, suitable for racing. I have not yet mentioned the “Drift” mode (known from the Audi RS 3), hidden in the dashboard menu, which enables skidding to be controlled.

What about combustion? The manufacturer says that the average fuel consumption is 10.2 l/100 km. In my case it was more than 13 liters, but the city dominated on the test track. Driving hard will mean high values, that’s clear.

Cupra Formentor VZ5 – better not to look at the price list

The downside from the start is not the annoyingly slow multimedia screen that responds to the touch (I will suffer from that) or the high fuel consumption (this is obvious with a 390-horsepower engine). It is the amount in the price list. For example, the Cupra Leon VZ Cup costs about PLN 208,000. PLN, Cupra Ateca – from more than PLN 230,000. So what could the price of the Cupra Formentor VZ5 be? Maybe 280 or 300 thousand. zloty? No, it’s … 343 thousand. PLN, ie for more than 113 thousand. more than the 310-horsepower VZ 2.0 TSI 4Drive variant. It’s a lot, but you always pay extra for exclusivity. Audi RS3 costs at least PLN 292,000, RS3 Limousine – about PLN 301,000. However, in the case of the German brand, you have to spend more money on various accessories and these are smaller cars than the Formentor.

Cupra Formentor VZ5 – in my opinion

I loved the Cupra Formentor from the start and would love to have it in my garage. It’s the perfect size for me, and in the VZ5 version it delivers excitement while driving without sacrificing anything on a daily basis. It’s the perfect sports car in crossover leather. If you have an unlimited budget, that’s easy, because this could be the last chance to buy a new car with a five-cylinder engine. If the high price is an obstacle, the 300-horsepower 2.0 TSI will also do the trick.
