Chinese manufacturer Chery will produce in Spain


Chinese society Chery Auto signed a joint venture agreement with a Spanish company EV Motors build cars in a former Nissan factory in Barcelona. Car production Omoda de Chery will start at the factory first, while majority shareholder EV Motors will start making its own cars in the fourth quarter, according to the Spanish company’s announcement on Tuesday.

An important arrival for Catalonia

“Chery’s arrival in Barcelona will help Catalonia remain one of the leading car producers”said the region’s chief commercial officer, Roger Torrent, who recently met with Chery executives in China.

The Barcelona plant which is to be closed by Nissan in 2021 has been sold in part to Spanish electric motorcycle manufacturer Silence and engineering groups QEV and EV Motors, which planned to transform it into a hub for electric vehicles. EV Motors gained full control of the hub company in March and played a key role in negotiations with Chery.

Six planned examples

Chery Auto announced a 53% increase in car sales in 2023reach a total of 1.9 millionaccording to a press release issued on April 2. The company’s export volume was 937,148 units.

Chery is currently distributing its Omoda 5 crossover in Europe, which is the best-selling model in China and its top-of-the-line pickup model. Platform sister Jaecoo 7 will follow later this year. The Omoda 5 powered by a 1.6 liter four-cylinder petrol engine starts at less than €30,000 while the fully electric version costs less than €40,000. Chery’s European range will increase to six models and five powertrain variants by the end of 2025.
