Landlust, climate change, natural disasters, power outages and now also apply to world peace: the Ford F-150 Lightning is the right car at the right time. Unfortunately only for the USA at the moment. Ford could also use e-pikup as a driving force in Germany.

Matt Stover will probably never forget this trip to Texas in February 2021 soon. Because the family celebration was a hindrance to the Ford developer. At that time, a winter storm paralyzed the power supply across the country and ended up killing hundreds of people. With the exception of a few damaged containers in the refrigerator and cold damage to the house, Stover had nothing to complain about. But that is when he realized that his recent project would succeed.

Technically, the F-150 Electric should not be inferior to its brother and combustion engine.

Because Stover helped promote the Ford F-150 Electric, which, as the first electric car to drive the public, is not only intended to make the most important part of the car on the American market fair, but also to protect the nation against accuracy. such situations. When connected to the home network via a wall outlet, which is common in high-end alternatives, the energy in the battery of up to 130 kWh is sufficient for the average family for approximately three days without restrictions. “And if you don’t have money, you can make a living for ten days,” says Stover. “Even the longest shut-off can no longer hurt you.”

Although the Texas winter storm was unique, internal power outages are common in the United States, with severe weather, forest fires, storms, and hurricanes. And that, despite their love of recreational activities in farms, forests and pastures and of course a large number of farms and corporate clients, is one of the reasons why pick-up is firmly anchored in the soul of the United States. So it is not surprising that nearly two million new trucks are sold each year. “Anyone who buys a pick-up wants to be ready for anything,” says Darren Palmer, who is responsible for the development of all electronic structures at Ford, summarizing the requirements. For sports and horses, quads or motorcycles, for camping and outdoor vacations, for a moving house, for a factory or field – and now also for Armageddon. Because that seems to be approaching the point where the weather is getting worse and the world peace is starting to deteriorate.

Just a tired smile

In contrast to its electric race, the F-150 Electric is also a cheap horse.

Palmer has a soft smile just for competitors like Rivian and Tesla. For others, because the R1T serves only the elite and has almost as much Electronics as the Porsche 911 is similar to the Mustang. “All sports cars on paper, but in practice and in terms of price in other fields.” And for some, because Cybertruck is still in the stars more than two years after its launch. “Electricity, on the other hand, is a real deal, a big deal,” says Palmer, after all, the F-150 is the best American car and has been at the top of the registration figures by almost half. karne. “So not only are we investing in the most important vehicle in the market, we are also unlocking the potential for a brand new target group.”

To achieve this, her project manager Linda Zhang has put a car on wheels that are more than the equivalent of a standard F-150 – and with a price range of around $ 40,000 and nearly $ 100,000 almost identical. “Electricity pulls in the same way as a combustion engine, has the same load, digs harder through dirt and mud and is permanent,” says Zhang, and talks about millions of miles of experimental conditions under extreme conditions. Above all, it gives the same sense of impotence and reliability. In a very fast hour you are crowned with objects and no one is very close, and in the wilderness you quickly feel that there is always and everywhere the path of Lightning.

With the XL version, a range of 500 miles

For XL batteries, the F-150 Power should be able to travel up to 500 miles.

You quickly get used to watching a variety of displays: Even the basic model has 98 kWh and travels 370 kilometers according to the American standard, and the XL version comes with 130 kWh up to over 500 kilometers – that’s the biggest gap in the charging network. even if they are on the back edge then it is not.

At one point, however, Electricity differs from the standard F-150: it runs much better. Yes, even the F-150 Raptor gets blood pumped. But where it exposes its 450 hp to steamroller sensitivity, lightning strikes without warning. Just a normal swim in the traffic, a pillar position on the traffic light, a bold kick and an open path are enough to turn the world abruptly and pour coffee from a cup into a large armchair.

And even after the world ends, the Ford F-150 Electric will be available. At least that’s what Ford’s advertising portraits suggest.

Of course this is not surprising, with a permanent all-wheel drive as standard, instead of an all-wheel drive that can be adjusted by 452 hp in the base version or even 580 hp in the high version with a maximum of 1050 meters Newton, which is . almost immediately found. With a minimum running value of less than five seconds, the pick-up, which weighs three tons, feels like a Porsche when it hits the ground, and at just over 170 km / h Ford even delivers a little more than that. light trucks that are usually fitted with electronic brakes at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

Slightly slow during charging

Only at the charging station is the F-150 not the fastest: Because Ford looked at the money and even more so at the time, Detroit decided against the 800 volt system. Electricity charges up to only 150 kW, so it takes about 40 minutes from 10 to 80 percent. In a fast food country, that could be a very long break. Especially when not only luxury brands like Tesla, Lucid or Porsche charge fast, but also Hyundai and Kia.

And because it can also be a little sporty, the F-150 Lightning accelerates up to 100 miles per hour in less than five seconds.

Lightning looks like any other F-150 except for the placement of LEDs on the front and rear with a large tablet in front of the center dashboard, because project manager Zhang is not afraid of the millions of existing customers and the design of spacecraft. But of course the flatbed truck is on a new platform, with batteries on the floor and motors on the axles, which has made another possible invention for Zhang: the largest frunk ever seen on an electric car. There, where otherwise burners slog, there are now 400 liters of storage space, which is safe from dirt and thieves for the first time in the pick-up. If you prefer, you can attach your tools to sockets under the hood such as on a platform, or cold drinks in a basin that can be washed with a water seal, or bring your fish home from fishing.

Attributes confirmed by new achievements – that is clearly in line with the Americans. It is not uncommon for Ford to receive so many orders within a few weeks that they stopped accepting 200,000 orders in Detroit last December. Even if production capacity is already doubled, it will probably take more than a year for these pre-orders alone to be processed.

One man’s happiness is the sorrow of another: When the great developer Palmer comes down to the stage with broad shoulders and a broader smile, Ford in Europe should show a long face to these figures. Because even though Electricity is the best number of trains for switching to electric ships for passenger cars by 2030 and commercial vehicles by 2035, transportation is probably far away at the moment.
