Subaru is launching a new WRX STi that isn’t quite one

When is the return of a Subaru WRX STi or something worthy of the name? Many performance enthusiasts are asking this question and the answer is probably when a new generation with an electric motor is ready.

At the same time, as you know, there is only WRX and its 271 horses. For 2024, the company adds a RS version over the range, but this track-oriented car with advanced suspension, steering, brakes and tires doesn’t offer any changes under the hood. Destruction.

If we’re telling you about it now, it’s because Subaru launched three models with the “STi” badge during the Tokyo Auto Salon exhibition, dedicated to performance and modified cars, which took place this weekend. Among these, the WRX S4 STi Sport which will be limited to 500 models… exclusively for Japan. There will be a raffle for interested customers.

Although this special edition has three letters that make you dream, it doesn’t get any power or torque. Worse, it’s only available with a CVT and not a six-speed manual. Subaru only added performance parts and accessories to the STi and revised the chassis settings.

On the outside, we see a slimmer front spoiler, new side skirts and a discreet but black rear spoiler – nothing to do with the massive spoiler associated with the WRX STi. In fact, if it weren’t for the “STi” badges on the grille, on the trunk and on the 19-inch BBS wheels, we’d see nothing but fire. The latter, by the way, is worn with high-performance Michelin tires that provide additional grip.

In the cabin, it’s basically limited to new Recaro front seats with pronounced side bolsters and silver stitching, as are the steering wheel and doors.

All things considered, this WRX S4 STi Sport offers more than the 2024 WRX RS that arrives in Canada this winter (mostly with a manual transmission) and is meant to be a way to appeal to Japanese enthusiasts addicted to the “STi” badge.
