all-wheel drive thanks to the amazing hybrid engine

all-wheel drive thanks to the amazing hybrid engine

Even if it is not present at the Geneva Motor Show that will open its doors on February 26 to the press, the American manufacturer Jeep is taking advantage of the media coverage to present some details about its new product: the Avenger 4xe. Already announced with a concept at the Paris Motor Show in October 2022, this all-wheel drive version will arrive on the market at the end of 2024.

The 4xe version is almost forced on a brand like Jeep, which built its reputation on its cross-country 4x4s. This has not stopped it from offering non-all-wheel drive vehicles for several years, such as the Renegade or the Avenger. The latter, which has electric motors, a small hybrid and 100% heat engines, will therefore qualify for its 4×4 variant with some specific operation. Although we expected to see all-wheel drive on a 100% electric motor, as previously announced by Jeep, it is ultimately a hybrid gasoline engine that serves as the base.

Some hybrid

Indeed, the Avenger 4xe uses a new 1.2 48V 136 hp hybrid engine from the Stellantis group, its electric motor is mated to an e-DCS6 automatic transmission provided by Punch Powertrain. To convert the model to 4×4, a second electric motor is installed at the rear. The design is somewhat similar to the Toyota Yaris Cross, one of the rare urban SUVs to offer a 4×4 variant. The two electric motors produce 21 kW each, and they do not recharge from the outlet unlike other Jeep 4xes (Wrangler, Renegade and Compass). It is mostly used to have permanent all-wheel drive regardless of the state of charge of the battery, probably less than 1 kWh. So the Avenger becomes a true example of a hybrid with this duo of electric motors, but do not count on driving several kilometers in electric mode. Power consumption will be more than a few meters, for example during maneuvers or slow starts at stop signs or traffic lights, for example.

For now, Jeep is not releasing more technical details. So we will have to wait for the official presentation of Alfa Romeo Milano, which will offer this unprecedented all-wheel drive hybrid from April 2024 for sale around September. In turn, the Avenger 4xe will go on sale by the end of the year, along with already existing variants such as the 100 hp e-Hybrid micro-hybrid with a robotic gearbox, a version with a manual gearbox without hybrid or a 156 hp electric.
