American car manufacturer Lucid brings its first electric car to market, Lucid Air. The luxury sedan will be seen with over 1000 hp, incredible charging speed and the latest technology – the search for Tesla begins, despite obstacles.

Lucid is in the starting blocks. The American car manufacturer plans to open its first European retail store, exhibition room in Munich, on Friday, May 13. To this end, the company enters its first electric car, the Lucid Air.

And up to 1111 hp, a speed increase from 0 to 100 in 2.5 seconds and an expected range of up to 845 km, “the world’s fastest electric car”, as the manufacturer promises, is intended to stimulate the automotive market. The luxury sedan is set to compete with luxury cars from BMW, Mercedes and Audi – but most of all with the Model S from Tesla. In fact, according to the manufacturer, Lucid Air accelerates slightly faster than the Taycan, the more powerful Porsche, but does not fully meet the specific performance of the Model S Plaid (1020 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.1). seconds).

With a 900 V charging system and a maximum charging capacity of 300 kW, Lucid Air is ahead of the Porsche Taycan, which works with 800 volt technology. Tesla has only 400 volt architecture. In addition, Lucid Air should be able to charge electricity at a distance of 400 kilometers for 15 minutes. At 0.21, the cd value is approximately equal to the competition from Tesla.

The windows covered with an aluminum car frame, which not only saves weight but also protects occupants in the event of an accident, should also have an impact on the column. In addition, the sedan should be influenced by modern technology. Inside is a 34-inch 5K 5K pilot glass display. Alexa face recognition and voice control is also installed. The vehicle has a total of 32 sensors, including camera technology, radar and ultrasound as well as lidar, which are intended to make semi-autonomous driver operation possible. Two-way charging, where energy from the battery is returned to the energy grid, should follow.

At a height of about five meters and a width of about two meters, the “elegant sedan” has a wheel of about three meters. That’s almost the same as in the Mercedes S-Class. In addition, Lucid Air appears to have a large trunk capacity of 456 liters and another 202 liters in the frunk, a storage space at the front.

Lucid Air: Great Challenge for Tesla and Co.

Lucid Air is certainly a challenge that competitors like Tesla have to take seriously. Lucid boss Peter Rawlinson at one time was the chief engineer at Tesla and was involved in the development of the Model S. So no one should know the Tesla sedan better than him. And in fact: “A lot is a reminder of Tesla,” says Stefan Bratzel, Director of Vehicle Management Center, “Handelsblatt”. According to Bratzel, Lucid’s inventions are impressive. The car expert also makes it clear to the daily newspaper: “Expand the production and sales network, get the right service – this is not a children’s birthday.”

Because when Tesla did not have any competition when it started, things are different today. And Lucid is struggling with production issues however; The car manufacturer has produced only a few hundred cars so far – instead of 20,000, the original production target. By the end of 2022, the car manufacturer still wants to build a total of 12,000 to 14,000 cars. The production goal is backed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: It recently issued a major order of 100,000 vehicles for the next ten years. Previously, Saudi wealth wealth investments entered Lucid in the 2018 summer season with over $ 1 billion.

Introductory alternatives for over 200,000 euros

So Air Lucid has to adjust. In the USA, the launch of the market took place with the introductory versions of Lucid Air Dream Edition P and Lucid Air Dream Edition R, which had 520 units. The first one has 1111 hp. The second focuses on regular drivers with a distance of 900 kilometers. Two introductory variants will be offered to a small number of customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland who have reserved the model. The purchase price for the two types of designs in Germany is 218,000 euros, more than 90,000 euros more than the comparable Tesla Model S Plaid.

By the end of the year, Lucid plans to offer three versions of the Air Pure model with 480 hp, Air Touring with 620 hp and Air Grand Touring with 800 hp. The cost of Lucid Air is still unknown. Lucid Air Pure should be around 100,000 euros in Germany and the Netherlands. The car repair company plans to announce the price later this year.

Conservation is already possible in most European countries. For this, customers have to pay 300 euros for Air Pure and 900 euros for Air Touring or Air Grand Touring. Following the opening of the store in Munich, Lucid plans to open additional locations in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland this year.
