The iPhone 16 leaks are starting to pile up. So we expect the device to be launched next September. The latest rumors about Apple’s upcoming smartphone suggest that the phone will get RAM and storage upgrades. These improvements will be useful for additional AI features that may be on board.
This information comes from a known informant @Tech_Reve from South Korea. This leaker claims that the entry-level iPhone 16 will come with either 8GB of RAM or 256GB of storage, or both. This would be intended to give the embedded AI additional computing power and space to store and process commands.
The cheapest iPhone 15 you can buy right now comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (though models with 256GB and 512GB of storage are also available). Additional storage space and additional working memory are required to make the expected AI tools work (smoothly).
Only Google’s most compact AI model, the Gemini Nano, is compact enough to fit on a smartphone. This is the example where we have seen differences occur, for example, the Pixel 8 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S24. There it can changebut currently most AI calculations are done through the cloud.
AI on board
A recent interesting report has come from a Korean securities company.- Some analysts speculate that the RAM capacity of the iPhone 16 will increase due to the on-board AI. However, Apple is reportedly doing research on using AI in a device using NAND flash instead of RAM.- Me too… pic.twitter.com/U4XYg62X3AMarch 23, 2024
Apple generally tries to do as much computing as possible locally on its devices, without sending data back and forth to different web servers. This means that most of your information stays only on your iPhone or MacBook and therefore remains more secure.
Like Apple with AI features has promised If you also choose this method, the iPhone 16 may require more power. However, the announcer himself also points out that none of this has been confirmed and that Apple’s plans are still subject to change. This rumor makes us wonder how many of these AI features will still be seen on older and weaker devices.
We still don’t know what AI features Apple will add to its devices, but almost everything is pointing iOS 18 it will be packed with all kinds of generative AI tools similar to those we’ve already seen on other phones. Oddly enough Google can even help with this.
Apple can tell us more about what to expect at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Basically, this event takes place every year in June. After that, of course we will also get the public betas of iOS 18 and finally the new iPhone 16 devices will appear in September.
