Tesla has been supplying electric vehicles from its first European factory in Brandenburg near Berlin since March. Production in Grünheide municipality is still being strengthened, which also requires additional staff. According to the state government of Brandenburg, the US company currently employs about one-third of the target population in the region.
“More than 4,000 workers have been hired so far,” Economy Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) said in a state parliamentary economic committee. They come from 50 countries. Half of the workers live in Berlin, about 40 percent in Brandenburg and 10 percent abroad. Tesla has stated that 12,000 workers will produce 500,000 vehicles a year in the first phase of the factory’s expansion. According to previous reports, the stage of further expansion was previously frozen and the goal was to increase the first phase.
According to the state government, electric vehicles have so far been manufactured in a single-duty operation at Tesla in Brandenburg. “The second round is scheduled to start in the second quarter,” said Steinbach. “The third round will then be arranged according to the production increase.” Applications are currently being addressed in 145 courses and two study positions. If all the vacancies were filled, Tesla would be the largest training company in the state.
The German Tesla factory opened on March 22 in the presence of CEO Elon Musk and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). Critics fear the consequences for the environment because part of the site is located in a water protection area. Since this week, the relevant Brandenburg authorities have been investigating until May 20 whether government requirements have been met during construction and operation.
First, the mid-range SUV Model Y moves from the assembly line in Grünheide. Later, a Model 3 medium-sized sedan with battery cells will also be manufactured in Germany. Last year, Musk said that by the end of 2022, more than 5,000 electric vehicles a week should cross the assembly line at Europe’s first factory. According to the report, this April there were only 350 copies. It should be added to up to 1000 electric vehicles per week at the right time, but there will be only real sound production in Grünheide from 2023.
